I'm really stressed out about school because I was talking to someone from the bookstore about how I was suppose to be studying all this stuff over the summer and I have to take a placement theory test once I get there and I've been trying to study my Idiot's guide to Music Theory but that's not going to be good enough. I just hope there is a music ( Read more... )

i'm sure they have basic music theory classes. every college should if it has music. don't worry. i don't think it will be too bad. i still have homework to do this summer. school is...school. It is new for everyone and you shouldn't worry. My theory is really bad too. We learned a little, and my music teachers didn't really do a whole lot with it. i'm ok though in what i know. so are you.

Don't even worry about theory. The test is simply that: a PLACEMENT test. The only reason they give it to you is so that they know where to put you. Even if you took it and only got one answer right (or even none at all), they would put you into 101. Studying that stuff over the summer is only for people who want to get into a higher level right off the bat. As for me, who cares? I'd rather learn the basics correctly than try and figure them out quickly just so I can get into a higher (and exponentially harder) class. Same goes for aural skills. Don't freak out -- all of us music freshmen are going through the same thing.

Hey don't worry too much. I feel the same why. You'll be fine. I spoke to some students and conn admissions people last year and some people come in not knowing any music theory at all, you'll be fine. We're going there to learn this stuff, we dpn't have to know everything before we get there.

Ali, I think it is important to take a deep breath and realize that what is going to matter this year is putting the effort into learning the stuff, not worrying about what you don´t already know. You can´t do any more than try, and your education is for you. It dosen´t do you any good if you have to worry about what others think you know. Plus, you are smart and whatever it is you are missing, I am sure you will catch up quickly. I am sure it is just the stress of this last month and all the uncertainty that is affecting you. Once you get there, I am sure you will make a swell College student!
