with the lettered streets in Ecuador - 'Ch' and 'Ll' were, until rather recently, counted as being letters of the Spanish alphabet. The Spanish alphabet as I originally learned it in kindergarten was a, b, c, ch (pronounced 'che'), d-l, ll (pronounced 'e-ye'), m, n, ñ, o-r, rr (elongated rolled r), etc. I was definitely still in elementary school when 'ch' and 'll' were dropped from the alphabet, but that's still less than 20 years ago! street-name-wise, not long at all!

Elementary school, huh? When I was in 8th grade we still learned the alphabet with those extra letters.. It might depend on the country, too. Or the teacher. And now that I think about it, it seems odd to me that Guayaquil doesn't have a street named "Rr". It goes straight from R to S.
