When it's all over, they head outside together. Kitty and Peter are already there, so Cuthbert and Susan swerve away from the lake, heading toward the stables, and then around to the pasture in back of them.

They stand there in silence for a long time, Cuthbert leaning against one of the fences, Susan leaning against Cuthbert.

She's quiet, held safe in the circle of his arms, head resting on his shoulder. Her gaze is distant, focused on the stars. Eventually, Susan moves her head just slightly, looking up at him instead.

Cuthbert's been looking up at the sky as well. Then, as Susan's head shifts against his shoulder, he looks down at her, and sighs.

"Well."

That's all he can come up with, at the moment. It's been a rough couple of days.

There's a faint half-smile on her face, very briefly.

"When I were a little girl-- I used to wonder if the stars were worlds like ours, do'ee ken? And if there were people there, too, and if they were like the folken I knew."

And now her face twists, a little.

"They are, I wot. The same everywhere, mayhap."

"Oh, Susan..."

He leans in, pressing his forehead against hers.

"Thee has the right of it, I think. The same everywhere...bad and good alike."

It's a lot easier to be aware of the bad, right now.
