I have a friend moving to Chicago

Feb 18, 2009 22:41

Hey current and former Chicagoans. A friend of mine is moving to Chicago, and would like to know some information about the city. Places to visit, places to avoid, where the good, yet affordable, areas to live are, etc. Any information you can provide a soon-to-be Chicagoan will be most helpful to her.

Thanks.

Poke me on GChat tomorrow and I'll tell you all I know. :)

Well, that helps me, but not my friend, who can't read my gchat but can read my LJ :)

I suppose I can copy & paste, though.

I'm heading to bed now and I'm still hella-sick so I might forget tomorrow. Ping me to remind me, at the very least, and I'll reply here.

That work? :P

What does your friend like to do? There's something in chicago for everyone. Literally; there's even an Uzbekistani neighborhood.

I'm gonna take a pass on Uzbekistani stuff; not out of any sort of distaste, mind you, but I don't even know what the heck that is! :D

I do like to go out and be social; I do not like really loud noisy clubs or whatever the newest "hip" place is. I like art, and photography. (I'm told it's a good city to take pictures.)

I have a small obsession with most things Japanese.

Uzbekistan is a country that was part of the former Soviet Union. I believe it's right next to Khazakstan (sp).

Avoid: Chicago.

God, I hate driving in that city; I was once 20 miles away from it and STILL stuck in it's traffic jam! Admittedly, it was the end of the July 4th weekend, but still...

Take the red line toward Howard, get off at Belmont ( ... )

Thanks for the advice! :) I like science-y, museum-y things. Stuff that makes you think. I love taking photos, and will be looking for all sorts of stuff that photographs well.

I like checking out all sorts of new cultural stuff; especially Japanese, but anything new that I don't already know about is good. :D Music-y stuff is good, too.

Above all, stuff that can be done for free / cheaply is always a bonus!

Avoid the city, come to the suburbs.
