Star Trek was good and enjoyable. However, I dislike when people remake the classics but feel the need to change the continuity. At least they explained it away with time travel ( Read more... )

Pssst... Bones is McCoy's nickname- they're the same person. I think you don't get to complain about changing cannon if you get that part wrong.

Sorry, I meant Scotty. McCoy is a Scottish name, too! :p

I think those included scenes were completely necessary. How often did it show Kirk doing awesome stuff all the time for no point?

I dunno, man. Kirk didn't win a single fight in the entire movie without someone's help.

i look at the chase scenes as part of the establishing the 'character' of the character of Kirk. They are analogous to one another, when he's young, he's still defiant until the end. When he's running around on Hoth er... Delta Vega, still defiant, but with self-preservation involved. Both play to the "doesn't believe in the no-win scenario".

I think that part of what made Spock, McCoy & Scotty some of the better characters, is because they didn't just step into the roles... they also stepped into the shoes of the actors who came before them. Chris Pine didn't do anything as an homage to Shatner. The one time was in the Kobayashi Maru with his "That's hailing frequencies open... Captian."

Another friend pointed out that he'd seen this story before... farm boy wants to get off planet, ends up running from critters on an ice planet, and eventually blows up a PLANET KILLING SPACESHIP. Star Wars anyone?

Overall, it's a fine film, and I intend to see it again. It was a lot of fun.

The bit with Czeckov and the "wictor, wictor, two" made me laugh. I really liked that the movie was very tongue-in-cheek and didn't take itself too seriously.

I'd see it again in matinee with friends who hadn't seen it yet, but I'll probably end up waiting until it comes out on DVD.

I didn't really see that as much as a throwback to Shatner. I took it to simply be a more sarcastic kind of corrective pausing statement.
