Mass Effect

I started playing Mass Effect for the xbox 360 today. I know, I'm a few years behind the curve. It's a fun game, but I have one gripe. Now, I'm only a few hours in and was just made a SPECTRE, but so far, it feels that, much like KOTOR (which was made by the same company), you have to play the "good" side/choices to get the most out of the story

I always have wanted the evil choices in games to be less obvious and "overall" good to further the plot. I feel like I should in fact be able to murder children in fallout 3, suffer the consequences and enslave everyone week enough, to do my bidding.
