When Lee Seunghyun first saw 1TYM rapping with a number of other eminent artists on the television screen, he thought, “Those guys are pretty cool,” and left it at that. At this point in his life, beating his friends in video games and basketball was more important anyway.
When the time came that Seunghyun discovered dancing, he began paying more attention to the people on television. He grew more attached to those pretty female singers and their provocative moves, and there were some of the male singers whose skills never ceased to amaze him. He supposed he saw Jiyong’s face a few times during this era, and if he thought really hard, he might even remember seeing Youngbae with him.
But he was too busy fangirling over Xiah Junsu to notice them.
After he failed his Shinhwa auditions, Yang-goon seemed like a godsend, telling him that he was not doomed to the life of normalcy. He thought that maybe God realized that Seunghyun would never be able to fit in with society and decided to put him in a position where everyone “aw-ed” at his strangeness rather than mocked it.
He remembers that was the first time he actually prayed beyond, “God, thank you for this day. Amen”
Then he met Jiyong and the others. He remembers not liking Jiyong, who insisted on that Hyunseung, Daesung and Seunghyun called him “Jiyongie-hyung” because he was tired of being the maknae of the YG family. Jiyong-hyung seemed kind of snotty and conceited, and the fact he was YG’s golden trainee only encouraged his behavior. He remembers feeling incredibly jealous that such a ill-natured person should be so gifted, but he really couldn’t afford to waste time on Jiyong-hyung anyway, not with his situation.
He remembers the day Yang-goon eliminated him from the group with Hyunseung. It was like the Shinhwa auditions all over again, only this time he was pretty sure that no one would want to pick up a poor soul that was rejected not only once, but twice. He remembers crying in a way he never had, with more intensity and despair than his young heart could handle. He remembers thinking about countless stories where a young heart is brutally crushed by reality and thinking that he could probably make a fortune out of his own sob story. He remembers feeling hopeless, and even when he put twice the effort into his next few practices, he could only think about how his classmates would mock him when he came back home with his head down. But somehow, he managed to salvage enough of his pride and skills to give Yang-goon a better impression of him the second time around. He's not sure how, especially when Hyunseung was rejected, but at this point all he could really do is sigh a breath of relief, heavily tinted with jubilance. Sometimes he thinks that Yang-goon is really too soft and maybe he really didn’t deserve to be in the industry, but that didn’t matter anymore, because now he was Seungri, and Seungri was busy being part of Big Bang.
But sometimes when he’s waiting for his turn on stage, he remembers a blurry studio and the heavy burden of disappointment and the image affects him so much that when he goes out there a few minutes later to give a performance, he can’t stop thinking “mediocre”. There is a feeling of frustration and dissatisfaction that follows him well into the night, driving him to dance and sing for long hours.
But in the end, he really doesn’t have time to dwell on that, because he’s Seungri, and Seungri meant victory.
