“Son of a bitch!” Gwen rubbed her dirty forehead as she glanced around the wall of the brick building she’d been using for cover. Her contact in the demon black market was lying dead a few feet in front of her, his blood running down into the gutter. Was her cover blown or was it just a happy coincidence that he was dead? There was nothing for her to do, but to brave it out so she stepped out of the shadows with electricity dancing from her fingertips. Since she wasn’t sure if she was being watched, Gwen acted as if she were.

The energy bolt built in her hand and without regret, Gwen burned the demon lying dead on the ground. “You couldn’t wait until after our deal before you got yourself killed?” She cocked her head to the side, listening to the shadows for any hint of a witness and a small smile spread across her features when she heard the tell tale sound of feet shuffling.

In a fluid movement, Gwen shot a bolt of electricity toward the sound and closed the distance. “Thought to double cross me, Filar?”

“N-no! I didn’t do that. He was already dead when I got here.” The Morquloch demon raised his eyes to plead with the woman in front of him. It had been twenty years since they’d first met when he’d come through the portal that had opened on the Champion’s defeat. “I’ve never gone back on any of our deals, why would I start now?”

Gwen regarded the demon’s sincerity before nodding her head. “You can never be too sure, especially since Plymgryp is trying to pit demon against hybrid.”

Being a hybrid had kept Gwen alive when hell had literally come to earth. Well that, and the reputation that she would kill without remorse. Both had kept her alive for twenty years and Gwen planned on surviving another twenty. She was walking a very fine line as a double agent, but Gwen had always covered her bases and this was no exception.

“Please tell me that he still had the Cerberus Ruby. If I come back empty handed, my client will not be happy. And an unhappy client is an unhappy Gwen.”

The Morquloch demon held his hand out, palm up with a large emerald cut ruby lying in the center. “I’ve never gone back on any of our deals.”

She reached inside her backpack, pulling out the bag of Isicter eggs and handed them over. “These were for him, but you may as well have them.” Gwen tucked the ruby safely in her backpack and turned to leave. A chill ran down her spine an instant before she ducked to the left from the surprise poisoned spine and spun around toward the Morquloch demon once again. The full force of her anger and electricity hit him in the center of his chest cutting a wide hole.

Green demon guts mixed with Isicter eggs splattered her clothing and she wrinkled her nose. “Do you have any idea how hard it will be to get that out of my clothes?” Gwen wasn’t sure when precisely she’d become hardened to death and killing, but she suspected it was not long after the many hell dimensions decided to make Los Angeles home.
