[ Canon Point ] : Episode 28. After Terui's appearance, but before obtaining Xtreme memory.

[ History ] :
One year ago/Begin’s Night

A boy works in one of the biggest Gaia Memory production plants, nameless and ambition less. Purposely made amnesiac, he remembers nothing of his previous life, knowing only that he is the Child of Fate, a child that can access all of the world’s knowledge in his mind, and that his only purpose in life is to create stronger Gaia Memories. Beyond this goal, he has no interests. The boy lives only to serve commands that come from higher up, never once making decisions for himself.

Rescue comes for the boy when a detective and his young protégé are given the request to free him from his ‘prison’. The detective is Narumi Soukichi, a grizzled veteran to the detective business and Kamen Rider Skull. The young protégé is Hidari Shoutarou, a young man still new to the business and too naïve and soft-boiled to be a true detective. When Shoutarou disobeys his boss’ orders to stay hidden, the boy meets the person who will one day become his most important partner.

... and all goes not very well at all.

The two get into a fight. Shoutarou argues (using emotion) that everything about the Gaia Memories is evil considering how much pain and tears they have caused the city. The boy argues (using logic) that the memories are nothing more than a simple tool and that the only evil ones are the ones that abuse said tools. A scuffle breaks out in which the boy accidentally ends up transported into the core of the Gaia Tower, the power centre of the production plant, unable to break free.

It is Narumi Soukichi who helps the boy break out; however in the process of which, the enormous power of the Gaia Tower temporarily syncs up their minds, allowing Narumi Soukichi momentary access into the boy’s mind. There he finds the boy, little more than a child really, curled up against one of the countless bookshelves that dominate his mind-scape. When asked if the boy has ever made a decision for himself, the boy shakes his head. When asked what his name is, the boy can’t answer.

Narumi Soukichi then gives the boy the one advice that will shape the rest of his future: “Count up your sins.” He tells the boy to get out of this place and to start living for himself and to start shaping his own destiny and future through his decisions. He even gives the boy a name, a reference to his favourite book character; a real man amongst men who shapes his own future through his decisions.

‘Philip’ is born.

Soon after however, when trying to escape the facility, Narumi Soukichi is mortally wounded and dies, but not before trusting Philip’s fate in the hands of his young protégé. Using the Double Driver Belt, Philip and Shoutarou transform, becoming Kamen Rider Double for the first time, making their swift escape out of the plant and into a new life.

One year later

A year has passed, and now Shoutarou and Philip live in Narumi Soukichi’s old detective agency, carrying on his work and trying to atone for their sins. Together they focus on solving so called Dopant cases; cases in which a human uses a Gaia Memory to assume a monsterly form and commit crimes. Philip, who is considered a fugitive after escaping the plant, generally stays at the office, using the keywords Shoutarou uncovers doing field work to look up the culprit of the crimes in the Planet of Bookcases.

Slowly their cases bring them closer and closer to the true culprits behind the creation and the distribution of the Gaia Memories, the Museum Group; the same group who erased Philip’s memories and took his past from him.

As time and the cases pass on, Philip learns that his true name is Raito. Still unbeknownst to him is that the lost youngest son of the Sonozaki family, the main players behind the Museum group, was also named Raito. Indeed, there is a strong possibility that Raito’s memories were erased by his own father and older sister before he was used to work in the Gaia Memory plant.

Sonozaki Saeko tries very hard to capture Philip/Raito, going as far as to kidnap Shoutarou and Akiko and threaten them. A plan that might have worked, had Fang Memory (one of the two only mobile memories) not shown up, giving Philip just enough power to free Shoutarou and Akiko. This power nearly came at a high price though. Fang Memory was designed solely to protect Philip. When used by Philip, it sends him into a berserker state that helps him mow down anyone that stands in his path, while sending his mind into a state of insanity. The only reason Philip dared to use Fang Memory was because he trusted that Shoutarou could draw him out of the insanity of his own mind and give him the power to control fang.

[This was me trying to summarize the most important points in Philip’s history. Let me give you some more links on Begins Night, the general time line of the show, and on the technology used. I hope this is clear enough. For a show that is basically all about the epic bromance between Philip and Shoutarou, it has a lot of series specific information.]

[ Personality ] :
The general impression Philip gives people when they first meet him is that of a bored teenager, who, while not extraordinarily rude, still seems to look down on things that do not interest him. He spends most of his time reading or researching and has very few other hobbies. He has a tendency to latch onto small details and odd subjects, which generally weirds out people who do not know him. He does not consider privacy very important and will look up information on anyone if he feels interested. Philip is not a very physical person; he rarely initiates hugs, fist-bumps or other casual touches, instead preferring to stay in the background. The only notable exception to this is Shoutarou and later on Akiko. Philip also does not do very well in groups and tends to stay away from them or even leave the room. Loud noises irritate him, especially when he is trying to read or listen to the radio.

When Philip comes across something that interest him, he is nearly a man transformed. Gone are the quiet nature and the placid expression on his face. Instead onlookers will be treated to either a sunny smile or a look of sheer concentration as Philip works through the information he has. Philip also becomes less concerned with personal space, putting himself far closer to people than normally. When in one of these moods, he has a tendency to talk to himself and scribble all across the countless whiteboards that are up in the basement. When it comes to the pursuit of his chosen knowledge, Philip can become downright ruthless and unable to care about anything but said knowledge. While it is unlikely he would do anyone any true harm, he will badger people, annoy them, stalk them and possibly lock them up together if that is what it takes to get his knowledge. However once Philip has obtained all knowledge and finished his research, he immediately loses all interest in said subject.

An important part of Philip's personality is his partnership with Shoutarou. The two met a year ago on a night that proved very important for both of them and have been inseparable ever since. Philip trusts Shoutarou more than any other person in the world. Shoutarou's well-being is the only reason Philip would actually physically attack someone, as shown by the time he punched Terui in the face for scoffing at Shoutarou's sacrifice. Philip has told Shoutarou that he needs him to atone for his sins; something which he cannot do on his own. And when confronted in the show with the fact that Shoutarou might not be the ideal partner for him, he panics shortly, going as far as to ask Terui to become his new partner. Terui rejects him however and with Akiko's help Philip realizes that even if Shoutarou is half-boiled and his softness is Double's weakness, that he does not want any other partner besides him and that in those weaknesses also lies Double's strengths. And after all, nobody's perfect.

For Philip, Double represents not only his partnership with Shoutarou but also his ability to atone for his sins. As such, he dislikes it when people make disparaging comments about Double (Not as much as Shoutarou however). Philip’s preferred style of fighting involves finding out as much about the enemy as possible and coming up with a plan or five before leaving for battle. He will occasionally defer to Shoutarou’s on-the-fly style of planning if it is important enough to his partner. The only time he did not stop to plan ahead was when Shoutarou and Akiko were kidnapped, claiming that he would make it up as he went along because he needed them back. Shoutarou is generally in control when they assume Double and Philip has been known to humour him when it comes to coming up with name for the finishing moves.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
First up, the powers Philip has

× Ability to transform into Kamen Rider Double along with Shoutarou. As Kamen Rider Double, Philip’s conciousness transfers into Shoutarou’s body, making them a ‘two in one Kamen Rider’. Though Shoutarou generally controls their body when in Double, Philip is capable of taking over. If Double is injured during the course of the battle, the base user will bear most of the wounds when they transform back.

× Philip and Shoutarou can access Double using both Philip and Shoutarou’s body as a base. They normally use Shoutarou’s body however due to the fact that he is in much better physical condition. The few times they used Philip’s body, he was completely drained after the fight.

× Kamen Rider Double has a grand total of eleven different forms, which are dictated by which two memories are inserted in the double driver. Shoutarou owns three different memories known as the body memories and Philip owns an additional three known as the soul memories, as well as two special memories. Using their original memories, Philip and Shoutarou can access nine different Double combinations. Using the special memories acquired over the course of the series, another two are added. These are FangJoker (using the Fang Memory, built especially to protect Philip) and CycloneJoker Xtreme (which uses the Xtreme Memory to link Shoutarou and Philip’s preferred form CycloneJoker to Philip’s ability as the Child of Fate to look up all the information in the world)

(This does not feature all of Double’s forms, but it should give a good view into how the transforming/form changing works)

× Due to his possession of the true Gaia Memory, Philip is the Child of Fate which gives him the ability to look up all information in the world within his mind. Basically, consider him a walking, breathing form of Google. As said, Philip can access the Planet of Bookshelves in his mind, where he can look up everything he pleases. To do this however, he needs the correct keywords. Without the correct keywords, the search would not be narrowed down enough for Philip to be able to read it all. He does not instantly know things, unless he has previously looked it up. In fact, he is unaware of most of the information he carries within him, simply due to the enormous volume of it and the limited time he has to read it.

(In case you are confused to the process, this should show it properly.)

Next up, his strengths and weaknesses

+ Philip is rather intelligent, a fact aided by his ability to look up information in his head. He is rather attentive to detail and quick at drawing conclusions. What we mean by this is that he can calculate the spot a roulette ball will end up in by its speed and curve. Yeah. Who’s up for Vegas?

+ Philip draws a lot of his strength from Shoutarou. The two are the ultimate partners, capable of balancing out each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This does not mean they don’t disagree or annoy each other occasionally though. They manage to work it out though. That’s what being partners is all about.

+ Philip is a speed reader, who can scan and read the books in his mind rather quickly. For example, he read 3,543,280 results pertaining to Takoyaki in one night.

+ Philip is good at logical debate and enjoys it. When arguing for a particular strategy, he usually turns to logic to win.

+ Philip is adept at creating technological devices. In fact two of the devices currently used by Shoutarou/Double were made by him, using specifics sent to them by Shroud.

+ Nothing to do with anything, but Philip is a decent singer. This particular scene is yet another example of how random his moments of interest can be. (Proof)

+/- When Philip finds something he is interested in, he will go into a state of hyper-focus. His areas of interest are varied, and can be anything he does not know something about. When he is in a state of hyper-focus, he will not stop researching until he has found everything that there is to know. He will also not do any look-ups unrelated to the subject. His hyper-focus can be a mixed blessing depending on whether or not he is interested in what you are trying to find out.

- Philip has a very weak constitution. His stamina is low, and he does not have much strength. Thankfully he has Shoutarou to do most of the fighting for him.

- Philip is downright weird. Because he does not remember his childhood and spends most of his time in the basement, he does not really connect to people of his age. He has weird habits and weird points of interest.

- Philip is a wanted man. Because of this he cannot go outside and thus has very few friends.

- Philip's lost memories of his childhood and family are a bit of a sore spot for him. Early on in the series, he could be manipulated into a complete blind panic by talking about it. While he has moved on beyond that, there is no telling what a skilled manipulator could do with this knowledge. Especially if Shoutarou and Akiko are not there to remind him of the family he does have.

- Highly dependant on Shoutarou, and by his own words, cannot go on without him.

- Philip cannot fight at all without Shoutarou. There is no way to access Double's power while alone. So, if separated from his partner, he becomes pretty useless.

- When they do transform into Double, Philip's body passes out and is very vulnerable.

[ Other Important Facts ] :

Equipment on Philip
- Double Driver Belt
- Cyclone Memory
- Heat Memory
- Luna Memory
- Fang Memory (If possible? Fang is mobile and likely will only show up if Philip gets into serious trouble.)
- One (1) book (actually blank; uses it as a prop when performing look-ups)
- Whiteboard pen
- Normal Philip outfit which consist of capri pants, a long-sleeve shirt, a sleeveless, long vest, and high boots. The colours of his outfit are pastels and greens. His hair is partially pinned back by sparkly clips.

[ Sample ] :
Philip paced a little restlessly underneath the odd sea-sky, his book tucked against his side and the fingers of his free hand brought up to touch his face as he thought. His body felt a little stiff and sore as he moved, as if he had over-taxed it, though he could not figure out what had caused that. It likely had to do with what had brought him here, which was another mystery that pressed on his mind.

At first, he had considered a dopant as the possible culprit. Certainly there were dopants with the ability to teleport others. There were even dopants that could have put him into some sort of dream-like state which would explain the oddness of his surroundings and the fact that the sky looked more like a sea. And yet something nagged him about that conclusion. There had been no strange dopant activity in the last week; in fact, it had been unnaturally quiet. Similarly if a dopant had brought him here, why had it brought him here specifically and why had it let all his Gaia memories untouched? Surely, it would have been more advantageous for it to remove his means of battle.

And yet, if it had not been a dopant, what alternative was there? And perhaps more importantly, where was Shoutarou? Had he been captured as well, or was he still in Fuuto --had Philip even been moved from Fuuto or was he still there?-- safe with Akiko.

Philip turned on his heel, his brows drawn, spreading his arms a little as he dove into the Planet of Bookshelves.

“A missing person’s location,’ he stated quietly to himself and to the books, trying to suppress the nervous beat of his heart. “Keywords are ‘detective’, ‘half-boiled and... ‘Hidari Shoutarou’.” He watched and waited as the books and shelves moved around him, thinning out which each stated keyword until--

Nothing.

“Again,” he said, a bit more forcefully, but once more, the library came up empty.

Swallowing hard, Philip left the Planet of the Bookshelves, opening his eyes to stare at the odd street beneath his feet. If even the Planet of the Bookshelves couldn’t find him then...

Then where had his partner gone?

Philip closed his eyes again, rubbing his forehead as he racked his brain for a, any solution to this puzzle. In fact, so great was his concentration on this particular dilemma, that he had not even noticed the small orb of light that hung silently over his left shoulder, nor the new, odd mark that grazed his left hand. In time, he would notice them, but for now, his thoughts were only on his missing partner.

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] :
Concerning Philip's Child of Fate ability-

I realize it kinda inches towards godmoding, so I'd like to propose at least the following additional limits to keep it more fair and fun:

- He won't be able to look up information that is not from his original world.
- He won't be able to look up other characters/canons unless they are from his original world. (I guess the only exception to this would be things that are so so so pop culture that even your grandma knows plus things having to do with detective novels (Philip Marlowe, Sherlock Holmes, etc) due to them reading them in canon)
- Possible additional limits in perhaps him getting more exhausted from looking things up? In the show there is no real physical element/exhaustion to it, but I have no problem with introducing one here. Especially with that shiny barrier draining his power.

Similarly for Kamen Rider Double, if a Shoutarou gets into play as well, I have no problem with their Double form being much weaker than normal/them having less stamina/hits doing more damage/whatever other shiny things you can think up. They can be a bit of a damaging force; however they generally don't transform and fight unless attacked, so none of these restrictions should affect them too much. They'll probably just end up detectiving away anyway.

And just for the record; all though Philip is pretty dependant on Shoutarou, he will still be able to function without him. He might be a bit quieter, and less prone to derp-research, but he will be okay. Might put all his available time in finding a way out, but hey, at least he won't be weeping endlessly like some damsel.

For easy contacting, my aim is TheSeventhBullet.
