The world officially ended when I started my current job as I told them that they had to open all the post and date stamp it. Oh, and yes, we do start at 9.
I'd say follow your nose and get them sorting out the basics, because if you don't your time will be hell. Of course it might be hell getting them to do that, but eventually they will start to do it your way.
Stick to your guns, Kezza!! Don't worry about being a democratic classroom, you need to be Queen. In my school, remember these are 3 to 5 year olds, we have 4 classes. Two classes take the "let the children decide" approach and two take the "we have rules and will enforce them" approach. The classes where the children decide are totally out of control and no one is happy, not even the children. The other classes get along, are actually learning things and are much happier. Someone told me the other day that children need to have a say, I told them that that could happen once they learned all the rules and who was in charge, otherwise it could be crazy. They need the consistency, even if they don't know it. It may be hard for you the first while, but it will pay off in the end. The beginning of school is always hard, but I have faith in you.
I have no experience in educating children, but I am a firm believer in giving them rules and making them follow it. They are too young to know what they want and when they insist on getting what they think they want, they'll just wind up unhappy and wanting even more.
Hang in there, Kezz. I know you'll look back on this one day in the future - the far, far, very distant future - and laugh.

I hate when people are passing, see 30 seconds of me losing my block and then tell me in public what I'm doing wrong.
Lovely.
I know I'm doing a crap job. Thanks for pointing it out.
Oh, and 10-11 year olds don't want STICKERS for a reward.
