Did I miss something?

So I was re-reading fics the other day and discovering new ones - and I noticed that when John addresses the boys by their "full" names he tends to use Jonathan Dean Winchester and Samuel Michael Winchester. Now did I miss something? Was it noted somewhere that this is their names? Or did a couple of people write it and it seems to have spread ( Read more... )

I've never heard of them having middle names. As far as I know Sam isn't even short for Samuel, it's just Sam.

Dean does sound more like a middle name though. Hmmmm.

I never heard on the show as far as I remembered which is why I asked. I can imagine Sam being short for Samuel but as you say, I'm not actually aware of it.

No, it's not cannon, but I think we kind of feed off each other. I usually use "Dean Matthew" actually, instead of Jonathan Dean, but I do like Samuel Michael.

That makes sense, I wondered if that's what the case was.

I like Samuel Michael too but Dean Matthew seems to fit. I don't know why but I prefer it when the boys own names aka Sam and Dean are their first names, and let's face it who doesn't squirm when John yells Dean Matthew Winchester??!

There is no canon for middle names. When I write, I use Dean Michael and Samuel Gabriel - the names of archangels who would be appropriate for them in my overopinionated opinion.

I've always liked your reasoning. :)

Personally, unless I'm writing a story for someone who has preferences, I leave out middle names because I hate to be wrong. :) On the show, their police records don't list middle names--just "Dean Winchester" and "Samuel Winchester." kara_winchester made fun of me once for a draft I sent her. I'd forgottenw hich middle name she preferred and put "Dean Middle Name Winchester." I meant to go abck and change it but it slipped my mind. That's why I love betas. :)

Yes, see that was one of my other reasons for asking. I didn't want to include a middle name then have everyone go "no no Kerri" lol. Because I don't have a middle name personally, but I kept wondering if it sounded stronger to yell out "DEAN *middle name* WINCHESTER!" y'know? But I don't think it does, it's more about the character and tone etc.
Got to love betas though!

I've used those middle names in some of my stories but, no, they aren't canon. Just sounded good for the fic I was writing at the time.

Well I enjoy them! Lol and clearly they infected my mind so much I started to think they were just known to everyone apart from me
