Challenge: [#306] Defend
Title: Guarding Castles
Word Count: 537
Notes: No spoilers. I unexpectedly got some inspiration for a second drabble. :)
Brilliant aquamarine eyes met dazzling cerulean ones, their intensity matching. They broke their gaze when the youngest of the two children scratched the back of his head, making his spiky hair appear even messier than before.
It was then that the owner of the aquamarine eyes spoke earnestly to his younger friend. "Guard it with your life, mkay? I don't wanna come back and see th-"
"Yeah, yeah. I'll be fine, Riku. No worries! Go get some seashells for the bridge now, I'll stay here," Sora quickly said, interrupting Riku.
Seriously, Riku could be so serious sometimes! He looked more like a grown-up than a kid sometimes. But Riku wouldn't be Riku if he wasn't acting like…himself.
Sora frowned at his train of thoughts, before shaking his head and focusing on the silver-haired boy again.
Even now, Riku still had that skeptical expression on his face that the brunet boy had seen so often, especially because apparently, Sora wasn't even aware that his left cheek was covered with sticky sand. That couldn't be a good sign, now could it?
"You sure?" Riku asked again, concern lacing his voice.
Maybe they could switch tasks indeed and he should send Sora to collect seashells instead, while he stayed behind to make sure that there was still a castle left to decorate by the time Sora got back…
Sora, in return, flashed him one of his trademark goofy grins to assure his best friend that everything would be spick and span. That, combined with the shadows that danced on his face (created by the palm trees), almost managed to make Riku return the smile. However, he caught himself right on time.
"Yup! Besides, Kairi will be back any moment now. She'll help me defend our castle from the evil monsters of the sea!"
Riku thought about this for a moment, before eventually replying with, "Alright then, if you're sure…"
After Sora had watched the other toddler's retreating back, he tried boring holes with his little fingers in certain places of the sandcastle, laughing softly. "Silly Riku, he forgot the windows!"
Next, he got up to grab a thin stick with leaves and put it on top of the sandcastle, like a flag. Unfortunately for him, he didn't notice the huge wave that rolled closer and closer right in time…
When Sora finally saw the wave, his eyes widened in pure shock. "Nooo!"
Needless to say, Riku was far from pleased when he got back only two minutes later and encountered the disastrous scene. Gone was the castle, as though it had never existed.
"Sora!" Riku exclaimed, exasperated, resisting the urge to stamp his feet on the sandy ground.
After all, that wouldn't bring back hours of hard work that now resembled nothing more than a pathetic heap of wet sand.
Ugh, stupid Sora. Can't even trust him with something as simple as guarding our stuff, he thought, irritably. And where's Kairi when you need her?
"Sorry! Not my fault," the brunet toddler immediately countered, his voice matching his silver-haired friend's in volume.
Because when Riku had that murderous look in his eyes, Sora knew he was in trouble.
He gulped, shuffling backwards nervously. "I can explain it, Riku!"
"Too late…"
