The thing about Lynne Truss is that she's really a journalist, and she just happened to write a best seller almost by mistake. She's not really a non-fiction writer. And the other thing about her is that she's really English; I suspect a lot of her humour would make no sense at all to anyone not from this country. Partly because of the style of humour, but mainly because the situations she's mocking would be unfamiliar.
(I haven't read Talk to the hand, but I have read the first few chapters which were serialized in the newspaper. And yeah, I had the impression that it's mostly a rant with her personal opinion, rather than a considered sociological observation or useful advice.)
