I'm starting to read again, and I've decided to brave the libraries again :) The reason why I'm writing this is that I need recommendations. Who are your favourite authors? What book should I read
( Read more... )
Right now I am reading a ton of Diana Wynn Jones, she is fantasy. Patricia Briggs had some good Urban Fantasy. Orson Scott Card's Ender's series is good (but I don't like his other stuff) and that is sci/fi. Barbara Kingsolver writes good mainstream fiction (usually with some environmental/social lesson to it).
I've read school novels, mostly, most of them being historical, social or odd romances. I love Sci-fi and adventure, as well as not very sappy romances. I think I'd read anything, as long as it was interesting and well written (and translated).
Great! Happy I could help. The Patricia Briggs Mercedes Thompson books have some romance to it. The others, not so much. Hope you find something you like from the list. :)

Oh god, I'd recommend everything ever by Neil Gaiman. Good Omens, American Gods, Neverwhere, and The Graveyard Book are all great reads, and incorporate some really fun fantasy elements in new and interesting ways
( ... )
I saw the Hitchhiker's Guide movie and I imagine the books are at least as interesting as it, and I've had another friend recommend Marquez 9though she said one Hundred Years of Solitude is a bit too long winded and she might have said 'boring', but I'm not sure ^_^)
My friend from work will bring one of her two Vonnegut books, probably Slaughterhouse-five.
I'll write down everything you've mentioned and look for them. Thank you :)

You're welcome!
The Hitchhiker books are much more interesting than the movie, which was mostly just goofy. You'll probably like them more. One Hundred Years of Solitude did drag a little in the middle, I'll agree, but I loved the ending so much that to me it made up for it.
I don't have any idea how I found them, but there is a three book YA series by Megan Whalen Turner: The Thief, Queen of Attolia, and King of Attolia. I got them first from the library and enjoyed them so much, I ordered copies for myself and gave my neice a set for Christmas presents last year. Her mother (my sis) ended up reading them too. I think a fourth book is due sometime early next year.

I thought the plot, surprises, and writing were excellent.
