Of age in the wizarding world

I am working on my sas fic, which implies a Potter/Malfoy pairing with Harry or Draco and Scorpius, James or Al.I was thinking of the age difference and how their relationships might be affected, and then I realised that there might be an extra factor ( Read more... )

I agree.
The issues of an age difference of 20 years fades over time.

For example an age difference of 16 and 36 is huge, how they relate to each other is complicated and there is a clear power dynamic at play.

22 and 42 it is mostly an issue of the difference in the stage of life (finding a career/settling down vs. established career/family)

30 and 50, again it's stages of life and career and ambitions rather than 'age' that create the dynamic and so on until there is basically no issue.

Exactly. And if you consider thatthe wizards we know of married quite young and after Hogwarts they start doing things, at 22 they usually have kids and are well on their way with the job, so they're both 'adults', just with different responsibilities and positions.

It would be interesting to see that in an established relationship fic, I think, but I won't continue with that thought ^_^

I completely agree, and so would all the Snarry and Snape/Hermione shippers out there.
That's usually a point writers will cite in their stories. So while it is okay to acknowledge it mentally, if you dealt with it in a different way in your story that would make the story really fresh.

I wonder how many purebloods auctioned off their daughters using that excuse. *shivers*

When I started reading Snarry, i didn't even consider the age difference, I was so taken with the dynamic between them, and to be honest, Snarry isn't like Harry/Scorpius or Draco/Al, probably because all the kids are mostly unknown to us, especially when they reach 20.

I don't think makign a big deal of the age difference would be realistic, especially when the pairing involves a Potter and a Malfoy, but it can't be ignored completely, and I'm really curious to see how it will be handled by everyone.

No, making a big deal would not be realistic. And on the Snarry, there's just so much to them it's hard *not* to be drawn in.

I think the way it's handled depends on the situation... whether it's some sordid affair or if the two really fall in love. To the characters themselves, it wouldn't be a big deal but to the people outside the relationship alot of "wtf?" would be going around.

I don't think i could ever pull off a sordid affair, and I won't try now, but yes, the outside world will be tricky to handle and there is so much that can happen in the families. And unlike for Snarry fics, most of the characters here aren't well known. Would they have the same friends at 40? We know almost nothing about the Malfoys, and I think even Ginny would be quite different (and there wasn't that much to her to begin with, in my opinion).
