"How many times did I tell you what kind of cranberry jelly to get?" Buffy snapped at Veronica, who looked down helplessly at the can she held in her hand. This was her first Thanksgiving spent at her mother's cousin's house in Cleveland, and she now understood the looks of pity Buffy's friends and sister gave Veronica when she had offered her help. Buffy was a lunatic. A control freak. She was even worse than Veronica was when she was being particularly bad, which was saying something. Veronica was starting to wonder how Buffy managed to survive for so long without her sister or her friends killing her in her sleep.
A crash from outside of the house startled Veronica and almost caused her to drop the can she was holding on the ground. Buffy looked outside the window, and her frown deepened.
"Just once, just once, I would like to have a holiday without something like this happening," Buffy growled, turning around and walked out of the kitchen. "Is once just too much to ask for?" Buffy turned around and gave Veronica a forced smile. "Make sure nothing burns. I, uh, need to take care of something."
"Is everything OK?" Veronica asked Dawn, who had come into the kitchen. The girl, who was around Veronica's age, shrugged.
"It's a thing," Dawn answered nonchalantly, peering at the can in Veronica's hands. "If you're lucky, you can run out and get the correct brand before she notices. Buffy, do you need any help?" she called out, going to join her sister in the hallway. Veronica looked back down at the can before quietly walking to the doorway by the hallway where Dawn and Buffy were standing. Peering around the edge, she found her view of her cousins blocked by the closet door. Inching closer, she could have sworn she spied Buffy holding what looked to be a red axe and Dawn loading a crossbow.
What are you up to? Veronica wondered, carefully backing away and going out the opposite door. She had never gotten a straight answer from the Summers sisters about what they did, much to her frustration. Grabbing her purse, she quickly exited the house and walked over to the car. She'd switch out the cranberry sauce, and hopefully still have time to look into what was going on. Blood may be thicker than water, if the saying was right, but that didn't mean Veronica wasn't going to let something like this go.
