“We’re lost,” Donna told the Doctor, arms crossed in front of her. She didn’t know how long they had been walking, but the spaceman wasn’t getting them any closer to any known form of civilization. The only thing for miles around was a sea of evergreens.
“We’re not lost!” the Doctor protested, turning to face his companion. “We’re just a little...”
“Lost?” Donna suggested, gesturing around her at the middle of nowhere that surrounded them. He glared at her before starting off again, ignoring Donna’s smirk. The TARDIS had crash-landed in what they had determined was the Pacific Northwest, and they were trying to discover what had pulled them away from their intended destination of Gold Rush San Francisco.
“Oh, thank goodness, a road,” Donna muttered as she finally spied the welcome sight of asphalt. They put on an extra burst of speed, clearing the trees and making their way to the first sign of civilization they had seen in the hour they had been traveling.
The honking of a horn startled them, causing both of them to turn around. It took Donna a moment to realize that the car was on the wrong side of the road, so relieved she was to see something that could get them to where the TARDIS wanted them to go.
“So where are we again?” Donna asked as they began walking along the side of the road, wishing she had something a little more warm-weather oriented. It was bloody humid wherever they were.
“Eureka!” the Doctor exclaimed. Donna stopped and rolled her eyes at him.
“Brilliant, you’ve discovered something. Now where the hell are we?”
“Eureka,” the Doctor repeated, pointing at a sign. Donna looked up and raised her eyebrows. Written on it were the words, “Welcome to Eureka, Oregon.”
Before she could ask the Doctor why the TARDIS would drop them here, a horn honked, startling both of them. They turned around to see a Jeep with the word “sheriff” written on it driving towards them. The Doctor and Donna exchanged a look before turning to face the vehicle. She didn’t need to read minds to know what was on the spaceman’s thoughts. It might seem like a grand old coincidence that the car just showed up when they needed a ride into town, they had been on enough adventures together that anything that started this serendipitously would most likely involve a great amount of running before it was over. But then again, would she really have it any other way?
