Dome Lids

Yes, there are babies dying from bombs in Iraq right now, but I thought I'd take this small opportunity to rant against the dome lid phenomenon that is so sweeping the nation ( Read more... )

Well, I've found they're good for one thing: I recently developed a minor obsession with Dunkin Donuts' Iced Lattes. These come with whipped cream on top (if you ask for it). The domed lids are ideal for this sort of thing, as the whipped cream fills up the domed lid.

I've never actually had a hot drink in a cup with a domed lid, so I can't make a judgement one way or the other, though I can't understand why anyone would serve a hot drink in a domed lid.

Ah yes, the iced lattes! Sigh. I fear the iced lattes because I'm sure they're very good and if I develop an addiction to them I will gain 5000 pounds in a month.

Those domes are okay, actually. The dome lids I'm talking about are less dome-y. Here is an example:

IN D&D related news, though, D&D's hot beverage lid design is awesome. It is a dome lid like this one, but the seal is good (it doesn't leak from the sides like so many do) AND there is a little tab that you can plug the perma-hole with. So that the coffee doesn't slosh all over you while you walk.

It is the little things in life, I'm telling you.

Ah, that makes more sense. I wondered how you were getting coffee sloshed on yourself, since I've never had any problem with them. And yes, the Iced Lattes are very good. I used to pass a DD on the way to work, and I had to stop myself from stopping there every day to get one. Now that I don't pass one anymore, it's not so much of a problem, which is good, because those things are expensive too.

OTOH, I have drunk hot beverages out of cups with the domed lids you're talking about, while driving, and never had a problem. In fact, one of the things that annoys me about the flat lids is that I try to pull that tab up and it rips and then I have this big, jagged hole in my lid. I like the small hole in the dome lids.

I don't recall if I've ever had problems with the lid staying on the cup though.

Why? How do you not get coffee all over yourself??? Inquiring minds...

... I just don't. See, when I'm walking or driving, the "dome" helps the coffee from splashing up out of the cup. It also lets me fill the cup all the way up, instead of having to allow sloshing room like I do with flat lids. Furthermore, the smaller aperture allows me greater control when I'm drinking it, so that there's less chance that I'll tip too far and flood my mouth with scalding hot beverage.

There is the occasional splashing accident, which is why I double-top the cup with a flat lid under a dome lid when I expect to be in a car for a long period of time and don't expect to drink the coffee when I drive. But I find snapping the flat-top drinking flap open and closed in a moving vehicle a lot more hazardous and spill-risky than the occasional little accidents that occur with dome lids.

I gotta vote for the dome lid! I ended up sloshing coffee out of the rectangle hole in the flat lid oodles more than I do out of the smaller round hole in the dome lid... and this from a person where spilling the coffee out of a tall paper cup is pretty much a constant. Even when I'm just walking from the store and back into my car, and my purse invariably slips down and knocks my cup, I think, whew, I'm glad I didn't have one of those crappy old-style lids- only a few drops this time!

Hmm... maybe it IS only a problem for walkers, then.

And, as we've established, nobody cares about us.

AwW! Truthfully, I don't see how you managed with the flat lid. I'm probably just too used to spillage. I don't think anyone cares more for drivers than walkers, just so long as America consumes.

Want flat lids? I have one word for you- Wawa.

I know. I like to go to Wawa. Trouble is, there isn't really a Wawa on my way to work. :-( Only a Bucks County and assorted other dome-lid hawking places.
