Blood Ties
Sailor Fuku to Kikanjuu
summary 'She supposes she's gotten used to the blood.' One-shot looking at how Izumi deals with cleaning up the bloodied boys. Inspired by ep 3, where she wraps up Sakuma's arm.
She supposes she's gotten used to the blood. When her boys trail into the room, heads hanging low because they don't want her to worry, she becomes almost immune. The blood doesn't cause the room to shake or swell or grow anymore. The room stays as it is and for appearances sake, so does she.
She pretends that she's no longer afraid or nauseated by it, because really, she isn't. It's not the blood that causes her knees to bend slightly; it's not the blood that causes her heart to tighten. It's them, she thinks.
When they trail in, their heads hanging low, arms clasped close to their hearts and legs limping, her heart drops. She feels a fear and a longing that pricks her. So she learns how to heal, how to sew back their skin and knit together their bones. They sit squirming, itching to get to their feet and let the wounds take care of themselves so she doesn't have to. But she does. She shouts at them for ignoring her and there's a concentration in her face as she wraps them together again in one piece.
And then he lingers at the back. She assumes that he's fine but at the others protestations she inches towards him. And he towers above her, embarrassed and ashamed and hangs his head low. "Sakuma-san?" she whispers, a beckoning and a warning at once.
His unsure eyes raise up to meet hers and her breath leaves her. She didn't think it would be him too.
She tugs him by the hand and forces him to sit as she cleans his wounds. He speaks to her, trying to cut through the tension but she can't answer just yet. She's too furious and afraid.
"You don't have to do this, Boss," he says gruffly. He's uncomfortable here; he doesn't want her getting her hands dirty too.
She ignores him again and wraps a bandage around his arm. He feels so exposed here, so naked and under inspection. The old scars gleam in the light and he hesitates to let her see them all.
She bats his arms away and works methodically, slowly and carefully. She kneels in front of him and dabs ointment onto the cut above his left eye. A drop almost falls into his open eye when her finger quickly pulls the drop away. With a slight hesitancy she places a plaster onto it. And he can't look at her yet, he's too ashamed to look at her yet.
"Sakuma-san, what happened?" she asks in a low voice.
"Nothing Boss. We just got into a scruffle and-"
"I'm not an idiot," she interrupts him in a low voice. He stops and looks at her. "Don't make me an idiot," she says with accusing eyes. She brushes his hair back and dabs anti-septic on the gash on his forhead and she swallows painfully. His eyes cast downwards and he sighs.
"You don't need to do all this..." he says instead and she sits back onto her knees.
"Sakuma-san..." He looks at her and realises that she's known it all anyway, from the moment they stepped in and bled over the floor, from the moment he hid in the background.
"Did we at least win?" she says with a small smile. He looks at her and a smile spreads slowly.
"You should have been there!" Hideki shouts out. "Sakuma-san was amazing! You should have seen it!"
"It's okay," she says softly. "I'd rather sew you all together than watch you get ripped apart."
The words hang in the air and the group is unsettled.
"Boss," Sakuma says hoarsely.
"It's okay," she says with shining eyes. "It's okay."
They leave and she looks at her hands. Covered in their blood, her hands lie in her lap and she stares into them. It's not the blood, she thinks. It's them...
It's only later that he comes back with a bowl of warm soapy water and a towel that she snaps awake. He kneels in front of her and places her hands gently in the bowl and begins to gently wipe away the blood.
"If you're going to look after us Boss, who's going to look after you?" he says slowly and her heart fills.
"Sakuma-san," she says and he looks up at her. She grins at him through her tears and he can't help but smile back.
