Tungurahua went off in 1999, been rumbling for the intervening years, & went off again in May of this year, the intensity & frequency of activities been increasing since the last two months. Yesterday, 17,000 inhabitants in nearby towns have been ordered to evacuate the area.
It's just one of the active volcanoes in the Ecuadorian Andes. In 2002, Pichincha, overlooking metropolitan Quito, blew its top. Fortunately, the explosion took place on the slope facing away from the city.
It's not right next to my hometwon Guayaquil, but close enough (Ecuador is a small country) that a westerly wind could bring some ashes over the city, making life very miserable. Fortunately, the wind is blowing in the easterly direction, for now.
