Phoenix had been out walking in the city, simply strolling for the sole purpose of getting air and space around him, to enjoy the life of Barcelona. The vampire had walked far, almost to the other edge of the city where he stopped for a caf. Sitting out in the warm night air savoring his thick rich drink, he’d taken a seat out on the sidewalk, lazily sipping his beverage watching the mortals when the flutter of a book left sitting on a nearby chair caught his attention.

With a grin of curiosity since no one seemed to claim the book during the time it took for him to finish his caf, Phoenix picked it up. A frown settling across his features as he recognized the title; a book he himself had enjoyed on more than one occasion and decided to lend it to his priest with the insistence Santiago would enjoy it almost as much as he.

But now as the noble born flipped through the book it dawned on him, this was *his* book. The very one he’d given his lover, it even had his silly hand drawn doodles in the margins of certain pages. He flipped to the inside cover only to find there a strange book plate stating this book 'was to be shared and enjoyed by anyone who’d found it.'

"But I gave this to you." The vampire spoke to no one present as he closed the book and dropped it back to the chair. His priest had not read it, or if he had, obviously had not liked it and never made mentioned it. Phoenix didn't want the book back, it was tainted now, another gift he'd thought might mean something to his priest now discarded; like the few CDs he'd given Santiago but were found superfluous, not to the priest's taste or simply never reviewed and left untouched in favor of other music.

Why did Santiago do this? All he had to do was say he wasn't interested and Phoenix would have taken the book back. But this? The vampire gave a tired sigh; tucking his hands into his pant pockets as he began the trek back to his office. Play time was over, time to return to his 'real' world. Two thirds of the way back it began to rain and Phoenix couldn't help but think of his book, sitting out in the drizzle as he sought shelter to wait the storm out.

His father had once told him, "There is was nothing more poisonous than unreturned or cast off adoration; it is bitter like salt water, assured and fatal in every aspect, it only takes time and gullibility to find its mark." Phoenix hunched his shoulders where he leaned against the wall not really wanting to believe but couldn't slow the hurt and sting in his heart.
