Summary: It's almost Yuujirou's birthday, again.
Author's Note: Inspired by the theme "teddy bear; doll".
“Tohru?”
“Yes, Yuujirou?”
“Tomorrow’s my birthday.”
Tohru turned to the blonde boy and grinned. “I know. You told me last year what day it was.”
Yuujirou looked surprised for a moment, then averted his eyes. “You have a good memory,” he said, concealing a blush.
Tohru looked bemused. “I know. I’m the perfect boyfriend, right?” he said teasingly, draping his arm around the other boy. Yuujirou stuck his tongue out.
Tohru smiled, straightened his stature, and wiped his sweaty forehead. It was a hot, early summer day. Exams were almost over, and students spent their newly freed afternoons outside. On the weekends, like this one, the newfound joy that was riding to the beach, had now become common practice. Mikoto, of course, took every opportunity to visit his girlfriend, whose exams had already ended and had all the free time in the world.
Tohru wished that was the same for him. The few lingering hours of study left him exhausted by evening, where he went straight to bed. The work was minimizing, yes, but still there, and it only made the students wish harder for summer vacation.
Of course, the tiresome work only made Tohru’s free time with Yuujirou, whom he had recently started going out with, more enjoyable. On days much like today, they would take walks around town, going to cafes and peering in store windows.
“Hmm... so what should I get my cute little Yuu-chan for his birthday?” Tohru wondered aloud, scrunching his nose in a mock-contemplative manner.
Yuujirou spun his head around, long blonde hair flying, to glare at the boy. “Nothing! I don’t want anything,” he said quickly, peering into Tohru’s blue eyes.
Tohru stuck out his bottom lip. “But whhyyy? You’re letting Akira and Mikoto and most of the guys at school get you presents!” he asked in a whiny voice.
Yuujirou sniffed. “It’d be embarrassing to get a present from you. Only girls get presents for their boyfriends,” he said matter-of-factly.
Tohru poked Yuujirou’s cheek. “Whatever.”
They passed by a small toy store. The banner read ‘Children’s Toy Shop’ and displaced pictures of various Barbies, toy cars, and stuffed animals. Kids were crowded under a poster reading ‘All items at half-price!’
Tohru’s eyes lingered on the words ‘half-price’ and wandered over to the window.
“What are you doing?” Yuujirou asked, following. “You like little kid toys?” he asked with sarcasm, watching Tohru press his face to the glass. Tohru took his face away and gave a toothy grin.
“No, I just like cute things. Like that!” he said excitedly, pointing inside the window. Yuujirou glanced in the finger’s direction and raised his eyebrows.
“A teddy bear? It’s not particularly cute,” he noted. The bear sat next to a plastic truck, with brown fur and a red ribbon. It’s fake brown eyes caught the sun’s light.
“Yes it is!” Tohru insisted. “It reminds me of you.”
Yuujirou slapped him over the head. “Don’t belittle me! I don’t even vaguely resemble that thing.”
Tohru didn’t listen. “I know! This is what I’ll get you for your birthday! You’ll be able to snuggle with it at night, tenderly reminded of what sacrifices your beloved boyfriend went through to give it to you on your special day!”
Tohru turned and started running into the store, Yuujirou shouting after him.
“You idiot! You don’t tell what you’re going to get someone for their birthday! Especially if it’s one as stupid as this! You’re only getting it because it’s 50 off! Tohru?! COME BACK!”
The kids only stared, wondering what the hell was going on.
