Oh, I know, eh? A friend mentioned the Once More With Feeling soundtrack about a week ago, and I just had to listen to it, and that spiralled into youtubing every Spike/Buffy scene I could since, and trying to DL favourite episodes....
I also discovered that the English course I'm taking next year, the prof makes everyone watch "Hush" for some reason or another, and that was honestly one of the best episodes, so that makes me sooo happeh...
Oh, Buffy. ^.^ what would we do without that show?
Did you ever read Sarah Vowell's take on Buffy? It's one of the essays in her book The Partly-Cloudy Patriot. You should check it out. She's wonderful.
Buffy was always hung up on Angel, I will admit - they were soulmates, and hey, you never feel about anyone else the way you do about your soulmate, but Spike actually went and asked for his soul back - whereas Angel was cursed with it, and when he lost it, he certainly didn't ask for it back. Even after he got his soul back, Buffy didn't want anything to do with him. She may appreciated him, but she never really loved him, and she certainly was self-sabotoging. She admitted it herself in "Touched" when she says to Spike:
"You know what? I'm still making excuses. I've always cut myself off. I've always- (sighs) Being the slayer made me different. But it's my fault I stayed that way. People are always trying to connect to me, and I just slip away. (chuckles) You should know.
Also, I don't see how Spike screwed up more. He protected Dawn, he got his soul back, and in the end he saved the day. Angel ran off and left Buffy hanging. Spike at least stuck around to take her beatings.
Um. Okay. I apologize for saying whatever I said that got you so defensive. I really thought this was a friendly fandom debate. I'd still like it to be?
Anyways, first, let's make it clear that I *am* a Spike/Buffy 'shipper? Because half the time I couldn't tell if you were arguing for or against spuffy... (not trying to be snarky here, just genuinely a little confused.)
I don't mean to insult yours or anyone else's intelligence, the thing is *most* of the subtext in any TV show is a matter of fan opinion. She could have been talking about Angel in that exchange too - you don't know for certain, but it's fan perogative to assume she's talking about Spike.
And sure, she had feelings for him, and was most definately obsessed with him, but that doesn't = love. In my own personal experience, I've been obsessed with people without loving them. There is a difference. Sparing his life just means she liked him/appreciated him/etc.
And of course he provoked her. He's Spike. If he could manage to piss her off, that was great. You said it
