Then we just had a fun chat about following passion and how most people seem to use college as a gateway to employment rather than an institute of higher learning.

I just read that today..
And I found it both interesting and amusing..
I by no means am an academic..
But I cannot get my mind around the that comment..

I had to add..
That sometimes people..
Go to school to please others..
Not because they really want to..
Should they quit because of it..
Maybe..
Maybe not..

I think they mean that the person isn't actually interested in learning the things he's going to school for, but rather is just interested in the money he would earn if he has the piece of paper.

Let us say that that is so..
Sometimes in life you..
Must put up with certain things..
In order to live life..
I think that each and every person..
Has their own reasons or needs..
But the sheer search for knowledge..
Is not one of them..
I have known a few that go just to learn..
But that's usually because they have..
Nothing else to focus on..

Life is to be lived in the now..
But you must prepare for the future..
Without the hope of a future..
What is the point of the now and then..

You can still look down upon a person who is being materialistic over the person who strives for knowledge :P. Arguably, knowledge is a much less selfish goal, although, of course, it all depends on what you do with the knowledge or money.

Ah, but for the days of the apprenticeship, where one learned the intricacies of a trade in the proper fashion - from a master who was willing to teach. Those who wished to become learned went to teachers of things intellectual and abstract - for the love of knowledge and wisdom.
