Sometimes the Academy loves Martin Scorsese a little too much.

this was his first win, bro.
and the departed was excellent.

the real question is: why on earth did ryan gosling lose? he was so good in half nelson. sure, he was in the notebook, which sucked....but half nelson! ryan gosling. so cool. so so cool.

oh hey how's dad? he hasn't been home for about three months now.

The point I'm trying to make is that Departed got best picture essentially because of Scorsese. They've been witholding his recognition for a long time, but tonight just seemed like a giant Scorsese love-fest. Departed didn't deserve best picture. The acting and directing may have been good, but I'm sure Infernal Affairs was better (without having seen it). I agree that Ryan Gosling should have won, if only for the fact that he is so much hotter than Forrest Whitaker, who looks something like a lopsided african american troll....in a good way. I'm assuming Dad is still driving back and forth between New Haven and Englewood, like he has been. I'm not quite sure why he does it, because there's nothing to do in Connecticut except watch John prepare for his class, and when he's visiting Sue in the hospital, he is subjected to her increasingly bad temper and is made to fetch nurses, take care of her cell phone plan, and all sorts of other crap.

didn't see Ryan Gosling's performance, though I want to see it, but Forest Whitaker was out of this world in The Last King of Scotland. And what do you think should have won, Little Miss Sunshine? It was the runner-up of sorts, it won best original screenplay, but it wasn't dynamic enough to really be best picture of the year. The Departed wasn't about an important issue per se, like the three others were, but in the actual execution of the plot it had a wit that none of the others had. The only other I was really rooting for was Letters From Iwo Jima, but I still think they made the right choice.
