character name: X
canon & medium: Megaman X (video game)
age & species: Physically appears to be a teenager; chronologically it's difficult to say, as the series is extremely nebulous about dates, but the estimated timeline fandom has hashed out puts him at having been active for least fifty years. He's a highly advanced android, possessing free will and the ability to feel emotions. (He's often referred to as a reploid, the canon term for such androids, but this is inaccurate in the most technical sense, since he was the prototype on which the race was built, and the term is derived from "replicated androids," and he's not a replica. But I am way too lazy to split hairs about this most of the time, and so is canon, so hey.)
appearance: @ megaman wiki. (Canon has never provided definite confirmation about whether X's armor is removable, but as the original Megaman has been depicted armorless, I believe it to be a reasonable assumption that Dr. Light wouldn't take a step backwards in designing the next version. So I do operate on the assumption that X can remove his armor should he choose to.)
timeline: After Megaman X8.

personality:
To put it in as short of terms as possible (however cliché that might end up sounding): X is a hero.

He has very strongly defined ideals, and he is willing to defend those ideals, using force if necessary -- no matter how much he despises it. And he does: pacifism is at the core of X's philosophy. He hates mindless and unnecessary violence more than anything, and he has never truly been comfortable with the fact that he is constantly called upon to use violence himself in the name of preserving peace. He hates killing, and he hates the idea that anyone should ever be sacrificed.

But X is also living in a violent, black-and-grey morality world, where sacrifices in the name of peace are a daily reality. This has always eaten away at him, even to the point of causing him to retire in disgust to try and work towards nonviolent solutions after the Sixth Uprising. But X's fate seems to lie on the battlefield, and even when he tries to leave it, he keeps coming back -- because his world isn't ready for peaceful solutions, and because he's incapable of sitting back and letting anyone be hurt when it's within his power to stop it.

X has always been emotional, and while time and experience have taught him to keep himself in check, he feels as strongly as he ever did. He's a little more careful now, a little less impulsive, but the passion that keeps him fighting is the same passion that led him to start fighting in the first place. He not only has a strongly defined idea of what is right, but he has strong feelings about what he believes is right, and that's what keeps him pushing forward, even as he finds himself doing things he hates in the name of what he believes. That passion also makes it inevitable that he's never going to be able to truly come to terms with what he does; he hates making sacrifices, but every sacrifice he's made is in the name of creating a world where nobody has to make sacrifices, and he feels so strongly about it that it's impossible to reconcile -- but truth be told, he doesn't want to reconcile it. The day he stops feeling so strongly about it is the day X privately feels he will have lost himself.

He doesn't back down easily, for better or for worse; when his concern over his best friend Zero being potentially infected with the Maverick Virus was in direct opposition to Zero's insistence that he was fine and X was worried about nothing, X's reaction was to...go into single combat with Zero and try to beat the stuffing out of him so he could drag him back to medical. When X feels something needs to be done, he doesn't stop, even when it's something he finds distasteful.

It's also notable that X doesn't think of his enemies simply as enemies; he always recognizes that he's fighting individuals, with their own goals and agendas that they feel as strongly about as he feels about his. He in fact shares a similar ultimate goal with many of his opponents -- creating a better world for reploids. However, their drastically different opinions on what kind of sacrifices are permitted and necessary, and on whether humans have any place in that world, mean that conflict between them is inevitable.

He's a loyal and reliable friend and always willing to lend a shoulder to cry on or listen to a friend's problems, although he doesn't open up and admit his own insecurities easily. Off the battlefield, he's calm, pleasant, and easy to get along with.

He's not without his flaws; his intensely emotional nature is a double-edged sword, and while age has improved his ability to control it, it does sometimes interfere with his ability to make snap judgments and decisions that his best friends are much quicker to resolve. He can be overly trusting, and has been seen to place faith in people he hasn't known for very long at all if he feels they have good intentions -- which they don't always; while he's a good judge of character as it pertains to people he's known for a long time, he's apt to make mistakes with those he hasn't known for long, as he's sometimes to quick to assume the best of people. This is something else that he doesn't really want to fix about himself, however; although he's had more than ample time to get rather jaded, he's fully aware of that and he doesn't want to let his optimism be ground out entirely.

He's also protective of that youthful innocence in others; although he was initially somewhat harsh towards his rookie colleague Axl, Axl's drive and enthusiasm to do the right thing are very reminiscent of X in his younger days, and X's behavior was largely a knee-jerk reaction towards not wanting to see Axl go out and get worn down by harsh reality as X himself had.

In short: X is a hero. A somewhat burned out hero who's aware of what time has done to his drive, and who is actively fighting to preserve his old optimism; a hero who has never been entirely comfortable with the act of being a hero, because he hates what it entails, but who nonetheless continues to do it because it's the right thing to do.

And if he doesn't do it, who will?

abilities:
- X's physical parameters are generally superior to those of humans -- vision, hearing, strength, speed, stamina, and balance are all noticeably enhanced.
- His main weapon system, the X-Buster, fires superheated plasma that causes damage on impact. Shots may be charged, and at full charge, the damage caused is devastating and capable of blowing through heavily armored targets.
- His secondary weapon system, the Variable Weapon System, allows up to upload and store the data of other reploids he's defeated and adapt his own weapon system to mimic theirs.
- He can climb vertical surfaces by kicking off the wall repeatedly.
- He can dash at increased speed for short distances, even in midair.
- He's able to equip secondary armor systems over his default armor, which further enhance his operational parameters and enable a new special attack. (I don't plan to have him bring any of his secondary armor along, though, so this is mostly here for the sake of completion.)
- Eight wars' worth of combat experience, for what that's worth! He knows how to fight. He's also served as the commander of the 17th Unit Elite Forces for a good period of time, so he has considerable experience with commanding, tactics, and military administration. And though it's not specified what he did when he left the Hunters between X6 and X7 beyond "working for peaceful solutions," I've always interpreted that as meaning he spent some time involved in social activism or trying to work with the government to fix the problems in their reploid policy. While he's not an expert roboticist, he is mentioned to have worked in Dr. Cain's lab for a time and assisted with the construction of the first reploids, so he has some understanding of the basics and some lab experience. It's by no means a specialty for him, but he's capable of providing competent assistance to someone who knows what they're doing. So, in short: he gets around. Fighting is what he's best at, for better or worse, but he's dabbled in other areas.
- Possibly most important, though, is the fact that X is repeatedly stated to have "limitless potential," and nobody has canonically been able to fully understand all or even most of X's capabilities; it seems that Dr. Light took those secrets to his grave.

any plans for your character here? I don't have specific plans for X in this setting; I've just had a burning desire to play him for a long time and have yet to really do so. He'll be very committed to keeping things going smoothly in the caravan, as he'd like to see everyone able to return home without incident (and with as little conflict as possible). I'm hoping to have him CR it up with other superhero types, since I think he'd relate to them best (though that's not to say I'd be avoiding other CR, quite the opposite!).

possessions:
- His default armor and the bodysuit he wears underneath it.
- ...yeah, that's pretty much it.
