So, here's some: you're out there living life. It's not Portland, and it's not Amherst, and whether you end up loving or hating the experience (or a mixture of both) you DID it. And that's a big deal, bro.
You're right, it is a big deal. But you're living life too at Smith -- you don't need the Andes peering over your shoulder to validate your existence. Although it certainly helped get me out of my "disillusioned at Amherst" phase for them to replace Amherst's wimpy rolling hills. Now I can't wait to get back to the miserable cold and foot of snow, because I have a new perspective on my lifelong education.

Yes, I think time abroad is always the best way realize how much you appreciate time at home. Hence, why I should probably go abroad.
