In which I am a dimwit

I started learning to drive in 1996, which means I have been a provisional licence-holder for a substantial chunk of my life. I first took a theory test in 1997, but have never managed to pass the practical (I think there have been four attempts ( Read more... )

But, once you have your full licence, you can keep it, right? All you have to do to renew is get a new one printed? (that's the story out here, anyway!)

And then, in an emergency, you can drive if need be.

But if you decide not to bother, that'd be ok too :)

I'm sorry about the expense though.

Hello. When I updated my paper licence to a photocard one it only cost £10. It might be different for provisional licences I suppose.

i didn't get my license until i was 25. and every time i've had to retake the test (moving from state to state) i've failed it the first time! good thing they've decided i'm old enough not to have to retake anymore. at least until i'm elderly. which at this rate will be in about 3 years.

Ugh. Losing important bits of paper sucks.

I had a "permit" (the same as a provisional license, I think) for like five years, and only got my actual license at age 21. You had to get a 70 to pass, and that's what I got, solely because I parallel parked FLAWLESSLY. That was in 2003 and I haven't driven since--not because I'm particularly worried about pollution, etc., but because driving really still terrifies me.

I followed you here from the Ravelry sock thread and the more I look the more I wonder if we were separated at birth, although it would have probably been an awful long labor for Mom...

Took me three tries to pass. First time, I sort of almost hit a Corvette. Second time, I couldn't parallel park. But I can't feel too badly - the most brilliant kid of his year in my school, the one who transferred to Harvard when he got bored with the other extremely prestigious school he'd gotten into, took five.

I love driving, myself, but I have been to your town once and if I lived there I wouldn't see any reason to drive, either. Nice easy walking and, from what I read, super buses too.

BTW - have you checked the wallets you've had over the past three years?
