I was 14 when the first iteration of Cosmos began. My parents and I would watch it together. That part was great. The dreadful part was that my parents would tease that I should grow up to marry Carl Sagan. I have no idea WHAT the hell their motivation was for this. I can remember them saying "But he's so smart, like you!" This did very little ( Read more... )

Glad you liked it. My anger management counselor used to start sessions with "Breathe in your anger, breathe it out as compassion for others in the same situation." I try to remember that in parenting. It's not like I was horrifically abused, but my parents didn't believe that words could hurt, and thought I was too sensitive when I didn't want to be the butt of a joke I didn't understand. All I can do is not pass it on.

With both of us having our own wonderful memories of the original Cosmos, we watched last night with B (who has seen our copy of the anniversary DVDs of the original). I can only imagine how horrible the teasing was for you. Rest assured that I have *NO* intention of suggesting that she grow up to marry Dr. Tyson. I'm saving the show to watch with Catherine later.

I googled "Neil deGrasse Tyson sucks" and yeah, a lot about Pluto, a lot about his atheism (not thought-out like what you wrote, but just knee jerk "therefore he sucks"-like commentary.

(Also, I love Pope Francis!)

Also, it is important to understand that we are fans of Dr. Tyson around here. A few years ago when we caught B parroting the "Save Pluto" stuff, we sat her down and had her watch The Pluto Chronicles, so she would actually understand the controversy.
