I can't say I'll be terribly sad if Dissent goes - if I were to say so, I'd be a hypocrite, as I rarely go there.
The roomie and I checked it a few times, as we started going out again, but too often, the music was inconsistent. We're fortunate in being so far out of the "in" crowd that the drama wasn't that apparent to us. But really - common problems for us: even sitting at the back of the bar (and it's a fairly big space in there), it was difficult to carry on a conversation without yelling at the person next to you - just not fun. The choices of music were, as I said - inconsistent. Maybe I'm just old, but most nights that I'm going out anymore, I want to dance, and not to hard punk.
But yeah - trying to create a "scene"... play the music, and the people will come. Play the music consistently, and avoid the rumours of drug-dealing, and people will come. And as an old Lair-person, I agree: the drama will happen. Sit back and watch the floor show baby, it's what it's all about. ;)
I do totally agree with yoa as well - as far as making the bar work then the scene. And well, drama is everywhere regardless. I mean we have our fair share at the wreck'd as well. And it is unfortunate that shyness often does come off as pretentious and snobbish. But at the same token there is a lot of that snobbish aspect there as well - the we are better than you approach!!! But then again, no more than you get anywhere else :)
