You know, that whole day was really surreal, but one of the strangest things was how there were all those reports of car bombs, explosions and fires on the Mall or near the Capitol that turned out to be completely untrue. Did people hear a car backfire and think it was an explosion? Were there hobo fires in trash cans on the Mall or something? Where did all that stuff come from?

Where I was, in Ohio, near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, we heard a sonic boom from something taking off. The rumor-mill got going, and the dust-plume from the take off was reported as someone bombing the base. Or as one of my Antioch College political activist roomies decided to say "they just bombed the V-8 hospital!" Wow.... I had to explain that V-8 is a drink and VA is what they call the hospital where the veterans go... My sister had it a little worse... she worked on Wall St. She was in such a daze when they evacuated the island that she walked home 10 miles in high-heels... ouch. She no longer lives in New York City. She lives in Seattle.
