For my dictionary needs I use a free software JWPCE, it is a bit tricky to get it started, but once you do you get a dictionary, a word processor and above all, it has several tools to look up for unknown kanji by number of strokes, radicals and such which really helps if you're without furigana.
Other than that it is very important to get used to the usual japanese sentence structure, and how do variants bring different meanings. It sometimes get to the point that you can grasp a sentence's meaning just by how it is structured, being able to figure out the nouns by context. It's like they have a formula book for sentence structure.
