Character Name: Maria Ushiromiya
Character Series: Umineko no Naku Koro ni (I’ll be taking her from early EP4)
Character Age: 9
Background: Maria is daughter to Rosa Ushiromiya, and youngest of the four cousins who end up on Rokkenjima (Jessica, George, and Battler are the other three) during the annual family conference. Her mother, also the youngest of four, is THE BEST MOM EVER, except not. Maria’s dad is unknown, and he presumably left Rosa before Maria was born; this leads to a lot of stress, having to deal with quite an unruly child by herself. It’s not unusual to see Rosa screaming at or even hitting her daughter, but the rest of the family turns a blind eye. Maria is often left home alone at night under the assumption that her mom is working late hours at her fashion design company, when in reality Rosa is going out with guys.

Every year the adults meet together for a family conference, and while the kids are bonding and watching endless TV, the adults pleasantly discuss over tea how their businesses are going. By that, I mean they rip each other apart arguing over their vast family fortune they’ll soon inherit from their dying father, who really wants nothing to do with them. But, when you’ve got rumors of 10 tons of gold (roughly 200 million US dollars) hidden away on your property, you’d hate your family too after seeing how they rip their throats out to get at it.

Enter the Witch’s Epitaph! It’s a riddle that, if solved, shows the location of the hidden gold and turns over the inheritance to the winner by default; even the many servants would get that glory if they were the one. …Might I add that it’s also a ceremony to revive a ruthless witch, and calls for the deaths of at least 13 people? And that, at the family conference of 1986, said witch finally has the power to carry out the ceremony?

Personality: On the outside, Maria is like any little kid; she loves candy and sleepovers, and gets ridiculously excited when shopkeepers give her a free soda. Her attention span is pretty short, but of course if she’s focused on something fun she’ll kick and scream if you take it away from her. Maria loves her mom and would do anything to make her happy, even if it’s just so much as greeting her with a smile when she gets home from work. She’s a very energetic girl, quick to call someone her friend, and is able to get along with anyone.

However, Maria has few friends. She has a strange vocal tic where she will constantly say “Uu-!”, whether happy or upset, and the kids at school shun and bully her because of it. Her mom hates when Maria says it (it was cute when she was 3, not so much 6 years later), and it often escalates into Rosa slapping her or otherwise screaming her head off. Maria doesn’t go out of her way to make friends, nor does she seem upset by the cold shoulder she gets from her classmates.

Maria is obsessed with the occult and witches. If anyone dares to say something bad of magic she will vehemently argue otherwise; for her, magic is a very real thing (she is a witch, after all) and her little kid stubbornness will make sure that you do too. She’s also very knowledgeable of the subject, particularly with the Witch’s Epitaph and the Endless Witch, Beatrice, whom she affectionately calls Beato. In reality, Maria is her apprentice, and this is where she learned so much. Undoubtedly though, Maria reads up on it as much as she can, and carries around a notebook filled with magic circles in her purse everywhere. Magic is her life, and it gives her a reason to be happy despite her family and social life. That “uu-“ sound? It’s a magic spell to bring about happiness.

That said, Maria’s life really isn’t pleasant. With her mom always gone or tired and cranky, she’s left to create her own happiness… and does so. It’s not that she’s unaware of it, but she definitely blocks out the bad as much as possible. Mama got upset for a reason Maria doesn’t understand? It’s okay because Mama apologized and hugged Maria afterward, then promised to take her out to dinner. Mama then forgets about the promise? It’s okay because Mama bought Maria a present, and work is tough on Mama. Maria’s the ultimate optimist; she refuses to stay stuck in the negative for too long, even if it means throwing herself a slumber party and wrecking her room. (Which honestly, could have been her throwing a fit, but she’s a bit of an unreliable narrator in her diary.)

There’s also a very… strange part of Maria. Occasionally, when talking about magic, she sounds like a completely different person. No more “uu-“, no repeating nonsensical phrases, and enter a troll. You don’t know what that magic circle means? Ha! How pathetic, can’t you read the Hebrew? Instead of sounding half her age, Maria ends up sounding like an adult and uses some pretty big vocabulary. It shows that she’s a lot smarter than she acts, though it never states exactly why she’s like this. However, who would believe a girl going on and on so eloquently? It might be easier for her to put on this façade of a sweet, unassuming girl.

Abilities: Maria is the Witch of Origins. Pretty much, she is capable of “giving birth to 1 from the Sea of Zero”. In not so confusing terms, that means she can create a soul from nothing and infuse it into a vessel. This power is actually extremely rare, something that witches lose early on in their training. Maria however, retains it, and when she’s older it will grow into an amazing power. As she is now though, it serves to turn imaginary friends real.
