amartya is taking over actually, and over the past two weeks, there has been heightened tension (escalating to fights and such) between the "kickers" and african americans... this tension culminated into threats for this thursday and friday of a larger, move violent fihght. the school took action by implementing random classroom searches and additional visibility (by hiring a few extra police). today was pretty hectic, if you saw more than was publicly released. not too much race-related stuff, but random not-so-great finds. i <3 the chaos, and the prompt, intelligent response of our administration. "it's like the iraq war, only much smaller and more significant!" <-- a joke
Err, i don't get it. "Not too much race-related stuff" but there has been a planned "race-riot" at the end of the week? It seems like the fighting between the "kickers" and the "african americans" has escalated to extreme heights since I left...that is SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY pathetic. I'm sorry you have to live in such an environment. Then again I hope i don't end up having to go to TX State.
main difference b/w now and wen u were here is now we aren't really discussing issues as much as doing little activities. i.e. habitat 4 humanity, seminar from The Center For the Healing of Racism, etc. It got sorta disorganized wen krishanu left but we're getting it bak in order now w/ set officers. Race problems r getting huge b/w 'kickers' and african americans, but i don't know if it's worse than 2 years ago.
yeh, b/f it was just a buncha Anglo/Asian ppl in the meetings, but many African Americans got interested after the meeting w/ the C4Healing of Racism. We invited many ppl from the 'kicker' crowd to that meeting too, but they havn't been coming to the meetings, but overall the African American turnout has increased dramatically.

I can feel the tension all the way over here...I hope the main walk does not become a center of bedlam, though I doubt anything will happen - this SEEMS hyped imho.
there is a lot of hype. a lot of rumours, who knows what is actually happening or is planned to happen. its very upsetting, even though nothing will probably happen.
but that random metal detector search did uncover two packs of cigarettes, a non prescription allergy tab, and some blank hallway passes. i feel safer.
