Wednesday Night at the Brownstone, Beau Jardin

May 31, 2006 16:35

The streets were quiet as Kiki and Geoff, their dinner over, crossed by the cricket-filled park and turned towards the Brownstone, the pale street lamps glowing in the misty haze of a warm early summer night. Uncle James and Papa Phale had left the front stoop light on for her, she saw, but the rest of the windows of the stately, comfortable house ( Read more... )

Well, not technically speaking they weren't in the bed. Though if you counted the fact that the mattress was half on the floor and they were half on the mattress, then maybe you could say they were in bed.

Otherwise...Aziraphale and Wilson were snugged up on the third floor, powdering their noses.

Hoping that this wasn't going to turn out to be a bad idea, Geoff quietly followed Kiki up the stairs. He truthfully hadn't been keen on spending the night in the park, although it wouldn't have been the first time by a long shot that he'd slept outdoors. A nice comfortable bed had a great deal more appeal to it, and the idea of a shower sold him completely. Letting his former student buy him dinner had pricked a little at his conscience, but he figured once he was working again he could repay the kindness.

"You're certain they won't mind?" he asked softly, hesitating by the door she indicated. "I mean...I think Dr. Wilson and I patched up our differences fairly well, but...I don't even know your Mr. Aziraphale personally."

And hadn't really wanted to, but Geoff supposed sooner or later it was going to be inevitable that they meet.

"It's no trouble at all," Kiki assured him, handing him the towels. "I know they'd never turn anyone out of this house who just wants a place to crash until they can get themselves settled somewhere. They've made me wonderfully welcome here, and even in just a short time, they've made me feel like this is home, and that any and all of my friends are welcome, too, at any time. Don't worry, they won't mind."

The activities on the third floor, as distracting as they were to the angel -- and they were plenty distracting, if the state of the room was any indication -- didn't preclude his noticing the comings and goings within the Brownstone's wards. Generally, he didn't pay much attention, since he always knew ahead of time when someone other than Kiki was planning to be in the house.

So a fourth presence caught his attention right away.

"James. There's..." His voice broke off for just a moment. "There's someone in the...in the house."
