It's a benevolent dictatorship, maybe.

Goddamn, James, why are all your solo interviews so damn long?

Watch live streaming video from musiciansinstitute at livestream.com

1:05 "I'm very excited for this, because I usually, you know, I mostly do interviews with Adam, so hopefully today I'll be able to get a word in, which is gonna be great. Really looking forward to it."

11:05 "He took me to see this band called Kara's Flowers play... and as soon as they started playing I had this weird, mystical, almost spiritual moment... I was like, they need me. I'm going to be in that band."

11:55 "Being in a band is like being in a marriage, and it was like we started having an affair. And it was scandalous too."

Oh. My. God. James, you're killing me, dude. You dumped your husband(s) from Nebraska and ran off with Adam Levine.

Seriously, couldn't you guys have like, waited until the other guys left the house, and THEN loaded all of James' stuff into the U-Haul? Did you really have to do it in front of them? That's just harsh.

17:25 What's the dynamic in the band?

"Yeah, it's pretty much a democracy. It's like, the five of us always vote on everything, no matter what it is, but it's not totally, you know, it's really hard to get lead singers to do anything. At all. [to audience] I'm sure most of you have had that experience. So, does his vote weigh a little more? Probably, if I'm going to be realistic about it. Because you know, we can't get him to just go into the vocal booth and sing, he has to decide to, so, you know, he's... it's a benevolent dictatorship, maybe."

Oh, James. Snarking on Adam is still my favorite.

23:20 "You know, it's really cool that that record connected with people the way it did. And I really think that it did because it came out of such an honest place, because the record was actually written, most of the songs were collected about this one girl, whose name was Jane, and Adam was really messed up over this girl."

The matter-of-factness over Adam's fucked up relationships is my second favorite.

23:49 "Which, if you've listened to Kara's Flowers lyrics, they make no sense. Like, if you can tell me what they mean, I would be interested to hear."

*dying*

Interviewer: So you have a hugely successful band around the world, and all of a sudden the lead singer decides to become a judge on The Voice.
James: A coach. Every time we call him a judge, he's like, hey, I'm not a judge, I'm a coach.
Interviewer: I understand in the beginning you wouldn't even watch the show. Did you think it was going to affect the credibility of the band?
James: Oh, absolutely. I thought, okay, it's kind of over for us. This is Maroon 5 jumping the shark.

There's actually a lot of comparisons one could make between Maroon 5 and Happy Days. Starting with losing credibility probably not needing to be something you're worried about, dude.

Okay, in their new Entertainment Weekly article (which is hilarious, bee-tee-dubs) there's a little sidebar where James mentions this time that he and Jesse got lost in the jungle in Panama. <3

And then at 35:15, he tells the whole story. "One time Jesse and I almost died. Seriously." It involves getting lost in the jungle, figuring out they could just follow the beach back to the hotel, running into cliffs, and then having to jump into the ocean and swim until the reached the hotel, where they showed up late for lobby call, wet and bleeding. Oh the one hand, they're idiots. On the other hand, that's pretty badass.

46:15 "A couple songs just came out of me talking to Mickey and being like, give me the title to a song."

I am half expecting Mickey's sole contribution to the album to be the the title "Ladykiller."

Lastly, I forget where in here he was talking about how Overexposed is the first time they're collaborating with other songwriters and aren't just writing songs in their own little band bubble, but bullshit, James. Adam's been heading down this path for a while now. Sam Farrar co-wroteat least half of Hands All Over.

Oh, let's be honest here. Sam's kind of been having his own little affair with Adam Maroon 5 anyway. Maybe they're just waiting until after the Phantom Planet reunion shows to come out to everyone. Crossposted from Dreamwidth. The DW entry has
