“Maaaark!?” There was an urgency in Sabrina’s voice as she called that caused Mark to run up the stairs to the nursery where she was folding a couple of new white sleepers and placing them on the changing table.
“What is it, baby?” He asked worriedly.
Sabrina was kneeling in front of the changing table with both of her hands on her belly.
“The baby! It’s kicking!” She looked up at Mark and he’d never seen her smiling wider. He knelt down beside her and she lifted her hands and placed his underneath. They sat patiently for a minute or so before Mark felt a tiny bump under his fingers and a smile identical to Sabrina’s broke across his face.
“Wow.” He gasped. A few seconds later he felt another tiny tap under his hand and his eyes glazed over. Sabrina lifted her eyes from her tummy and smiled at him. They both raised themselves a few inches so they were kneeling in front of each other. Sabrina wrapped her arms around his neck and his snaked around her waist. They rested their foreheads together and smiled before closing the gap and kissing sweetly.
Sabrina broke the kiss when she started to laugh and Mark looked at her curiously.
“It’s still kicking.” She explained, “Making sure we still know it’s there.”
“That or it’s already opposed to mommy and daddy kissing.” Mark teased and then leaned in to kiss her again.
That evening after the supper dishes had been cleaned up and everything good on tv was over they made their way to their bedroom and crawled into bed. In the few hours since they’d first felt the baby kick it had become habit for Mark’s hand to rest affectionately on Sabrina’s stomach whenever he was near enough to do so.
“Mommy…” Sabrina whispered after a prolonged silence, her hand tracing Mark’s on her belly.
“Isn’t it amazing?” Mark leaned over and kissed her cheek.
“I always dreamed of being pregnant, but I never expected it to feel like this.”
“Is it weird?” Mark asked.
Sabrina thought for a moment then decided, “Different. But it’s not the part about having a baby inside me that I was talking about.”
“What part then?” Mark was curious. How many parts to being pregnant could there be?
“I never expected to love it as much as I do. It’s not even born and I don’t remember what life was like before.”
“Everything’s changed.” Mark agreed, “For the better.”
“For the better.” Sabrina echoed quietly.
They lay there silently, their hands resting on Sabrina’s stomach as the baby kicked softly. Sabrina was the first one to fall asleep and Mark was quick to follow.
