“Hi baby.” Sabrina said from the couch as Mark walked in the door.
“Hey, whatcha doing?” He hug in jacket in the closet and then joined her in the living room.
“Just looking at baby names.” Sabrina smiled as Mark leaned down to kiss her.
“Find anything so far?” Mark sat down beside her and picked up one of the several books that were sitting on the coffee table.
“Not really. There are some that I like, but I don’t love them. I want to love the name we choose.”
“Agreed.” Mark started paging through the book and they were both silent for a little while.
“What do you think of the name Kaylan?” Mark asked.
“Boy or girl?”
“Boy.”
“I don’t mind it.” Sabrina continued to page through her book and Mark did the same. “What about Parker?”
“That’s not bad.” They were quiet again.
“Do you like the name Ella for a girl?” Sabrina asked.
“I like it, not my first choice though. Have you thought about naming it after somebody?”
“I hadn’t actually.” Sabrina lowered her book and looked at him, “If it’s a boy it should be Mark Alexander Corky Ballas the third.”
“I thought of that,” Mark said hesitantly, “and I like that I’m named after my dad, but it’s not a tradition that I want to go crazy with. I think if we have a boy I want to pick a different name.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. What do you think about naming it something like Katherina if it’s a girl. Something similar to your mom’s name.”
“I kind of like that idea, but then I feel like I’m leaving people out. Like my mom is more important than your mom.”
“What about a middle name that’s like my mom’s?” Mark suggested.
“Still. Why does my mom get the first name and yours the middle name? I think we should just go with something brand new.”
“If you say so.” Mark chuckled. “Skye for a girl?”
“Too common.” Sabrina vetoed. “I really like the name Melody, especially since we’ve both been so involved in music, but we really don’t need another Mel around here, and I know that’s what she would end up being called.”
“I agree. Do you like the name James?”
“That’s a pretty good one.”
They continued to discuss names until supper needed to be made.
“You know I’ve heard many people say that they don’t decide on a name until the baby is born.” Mark said as he cut up lettuce for a salad.
“Me too. It can’t hurt to start looking though.”
“No, I don’t think looking is a bad idea, but I just think that one of these names might sound more appealing once we’re holding the baby and can see it.”
“Yeah, or the opposite could happen.” Sabrina pointed out, “The baby might be too perfect for any name we can come up with.” A worried look started to paint her face.
“Don’t worry Bri.” Mark set down his knife and wrapped his arms around her from behind, his hands resting on top of her belly, “We’ll find the perfect name. I promise.”
“Good.” A smile cracked through the worried look and she turned around in Mark’s arms to kiss him softly.
