1 Day Past Due Date

“Mark, would you bring me some orange juice?” Sabrina called from the living room.

“Yep.” Mark answered and appeared with a tall glass a minute later.

“Thanks baby.” Sabrina took the glass from him and took a drink. “How much longer do you think this will take?”

“To drink all the juice?” Mark looked confused and sat down on the edge of the coffee table across from her.

“No.” Sabrina laughed, “How long will it take for me to go into labour.”

“Ohhh, I don’t know Bri. The doctor said going over your due date is normal.”

“I know. I’m just ready to have it. Having a belly this big is so uncomfortable.” She pouted slightly.

“I can imagine.” Mark leaned over from his perch on the coffee table and kissed her soothingly.  “Just think though, in a couple of days, hopefully, it’ll be over and we’ll have a tiny little baby.” He smiled and brushed his hand gently over her stomach. She moved her hand to rest on top of his and smiled back at him.

3 Days Past Due Date

Mark stirred from his sleep a little when he felt Sabrina get out of bed and go to the bathroom, but he was fast asleep when she came back.

“Mark.” She shook his arm lightly, “Mark.”

“Yeah?” Mark rolled over and rubbed his eyes.

“My water just broke.” She whispered.

“Did it?” Mark sat up, no longer half asleep.  Sabrina nodded and smiled nervously at him. “Should we head over to the hospital?”

“The contractions are still really weak and pretty far apart and I don’t like hospitals so can we just stay here until they start getting worse?” She asked.

“Wherever you’ll be the most comfortable. Just make sure we don’t stay too long. I’d rather not have to deliver our baby in the car.” He teased lightly and Sabrina laughed softly, anxiety apparent in her eyes.

“Can we go put a movie on in the living room while we wait?” She asked and Mark nodded.

They walked downstairs where Mark put on one of Sabrina’s favourite movies, The Sound of Music, while she lay down on the couch.  Mark joined her there and lifted her head to rest in his lap.  One of his hands gently brushed over her hair and the other rested on the side of her belly.

“How are you feeling?” He asked as the movie began.

“I’m still ok. The contractions aren’t much stronger than the Braxton hicks I’d been having.” She told him.

They were quiet while the movie played, Sabrina seemingly relaxed while Mark watched her carefully for changes. The only clue that she was having a contraction was her breathing becoming slightly deeper.  Mark continued to smooth her hair and watch her face for any hint that they were becoming worse. He watched the clock carefully as well, timing each one and noting that they were slowly getting longer and closer.

When the contractions were about four minutes apart Mark noticed Sabrina’s eyes closing during them as she waited for each one to pass.  Mark bushed his finger tips up and down her arm when he saw her eyes close, giving her something else to concentrate on besides the pain.  They’d been watching the movie quietly for almost two hours when Sabrina lifted her hand to rest on top of Mark’s, which was still resting on the side of her belly. When the next contraction hit her hand squeezed his, her eyes shut, and her breathing became heavy.

Mark waited for the contraction to pass before he spoke. “Baby, I think we should start heading over to the hospital.”

“I guess.” Sabrina surrendered and slowly sat up.

“I’ll go grab your bags and throw them in the car if you want to wait a minute.” Sabrina nodded and Mark bolted up the stairs.

“I need one more big push Sabrina and you’ll be able to hold your baby.” The doctor encouraged without looking up at her. Sabrina looked up at Mark with a tear and sweat stained face and he smiled encouragingly at her.

“You can do it Bri. Our baby is almost here.” Sabrina could hear the excitement in his voice and gave one more push.

“That’s it, there’s your baby.” The doctor quickly lifted the brand new infant onto Sabrina’s chest and the nurse beside her quickly started drying it off.

“It’s a girl!” Sabrina cried, her hands brushing over the new baby’s head softly. “A girl, we have a girl!”

“She’s perfect.” Mark said excitedly. He was fighting back tears, but when Sabrina looked at him, her face painted with pure joy, he couldn’t hold them back any longer. “She’s beautiful.”

They admired their baby while the nurse dried her off, enjoying finally being able to hear her cries and feel her soft skin before Mark cut the cord and the doctor carried her away to be weighed, measured and checked over.

“She’s ours.” Sabrina sighed as she watched the doctor’s skill-full hands move over their daughter methodically.

“She’s beautiful.” Mark repeated. He leaned down and kissed Sabrina’s forehead. A few minutes later their daughter was carried back over to them wrapped snugly in a pink blanket and was laid gently in Sabrina’s arms. She ran her fingers lovingly over the baby’s face and soft tuffs of hair.  Mark sat down in the chair beside the bed and leaned over so he could look at his daughter.

“She has such dark hair.” He noted.

“That’s definitely from you. My hair was a lot lighter when I was born, but it got a bit darker as I got older. I think she has your eyes.” Sabrina smiled.

“How can you tell? She’s sleeping.” Mark chuckled.

“I know, but they’re shaped the same.”  They watched their daughter and passed her back and forth for a little while, enjoying just being able to finally see her and then exhaustion rolled over Sabrina.

“Would you take her for a bit? I need to close my eyes.”

“Of course.” Mark stood up and gathered their daughter in his arms and then sat back down.  Sabrina leaned back against the bed and watched her husband and daughter for a moment before her eyelids gave way and she was fast asleep.
