It's a series about tolerance, so telling fans after the fact is sort of a good thing. "You know that guy you know and love, (not unlike that one uncle), well, he's a homosexual. Surprise!"
(I always thought Lupin or Sirius was the Gay, but Dumbledore crossed my mind as a possibility.)
Actually, most slash/fic is written by middle-age women. So you know.
And if you read whole article (it's two pages) you would see that this was at a large American book reading for a series of schools during her US book tour. The question came from a student during a Q&A section. So, probably not looking for attention.
Also, as a writer, I can safely say that there are some things that you know about your character that never actually comes out in the books because, frankly, there's no need to talk about it. Dumbledore never needed to come out of the closet during the series because it wasn't relevant to the problems that Harry was dealing with. Of all the issues he had to work out, his sexuality was never one of them; he was definitely a comfortable hetero.
But I'll admit that both of your first two points are possibilities.
(and dear God those misspellings of 'forest' and 'relevant' are horrendous - you should know better than do something like that on my journal)
