Summary:Sakura overhears a conversation between Tomoyo and Syaoran
I, Sakura Kinomoto, stood staring at my friends. Syaoran Li and Tomoyo Daidouji were whispering to each other, their backs to me. I glared at them, wanting to know what they always talk about when they walk away like that. They always have to talk by themselves and never let me know what they’re saying. Tomoyo won’t tell me, Syaoran won’t either. They both change the topic and ignore me if I say anything else about it.
When Syaoran looked at me, I stuck my tongue out at him. He shook his head and grinned. When Tomoyo poked his arm, he turned to look at her again.
It was almost as if they were going out. But Tomoyo said that she wasn’t going to steal Syaoran away from me. She knows that I love him, even if I can’t say that he’s mine. Maybe I should tell her again.
With that excuse in mind, I started to walk toward them. I got close enough to hear; “Sakura won’t answer. She’ll ha-” before Syaoran noticed that I was within hearing range. He turned red and looked away. Tomoyo glared at me. “What?”
“I told you that we needed time to talk to each other. This is really important Sakura.”
“I know, I know. I don’t like being left out, that’s all. Just tell me what you’re talking about and I’ll leave you alone.”
Tomoyo rolled her eyes. “A party.”
I decided this was not the time to play dumb. “And what does that have to do with me?”
Syaoran turned to look at me, an odd look on his face. “What do you mean?”
“I heard you say that I won’t answer. What won’t I answer and why don’t you ask me yourself and find out.”
As Syaoran turned red, Tomoyo answered. “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell him. If he wants to know so badly, he should ask you. He’s too chicken.”
Syaoran glared at her. “You know just as well as I do that I’m not too chicken. I just don’t want to ask.”
They ignored me as they went back to talking amongst themselves.
“Because you don’t want to be hurt. I know.”
I didn’t like being ignored or left out. “I won’t hurt Syaoran. You know that Tomoyo. Syaoran should know that too. I’d never hurt anyone on purpose.”
“I know that you won’t hurt me, but I also know that you don’t lie. There is no way around this without something happening to someone.”
I gave up on the two of them and told them that I was going home. I walked away, but after I turned the corner, I stopped and pulled out the Sakura Cards. After the last card had been caught, there has been more coming up and Syaoran and I have found some of them. The only difference this time around is that I have some cards that they don’t know about. Like the Invisible Card.
I took out said card and used it on myself. Walking back around the corner, I started in the direction that Tomoyo and Syaoran were. Except they weren’t there anymore. I walked straight and sure enough the two of them were sitting on the swings in the park.
I walked up to them quietly and listened to what they were saying.
“Just drop it, Syaoran. She didn’t hear that much of the conversation to know what we were talking about.”
Syaoran rested his head in his hands. “Maybe not, but you heard her ask what did it have to do with her. She’s not getting stupider, Tomoyo, she’s getting a hell of a lot smarter.”
Tomoyo grinned. “And it’s about time that she did. All these years and she hasn’t guessed yet.”
“That’s a good thing. I don’t want her to guess. I don’t want her to know. If she never finds out, that’s fine with me.”
“So you’re going to leave eventually and never tell her that you love her?”
“She doesn’t need to know. She’s survived these years without knowing. She’ll survive the rest. And it’s not like she’s going to tell me she loves me back.”
“We already went through this. She loves you. She just thinks that you think of her as a rival. She hasn’t said anything to you because she doesn’t want to scare you off. She’s happy being around you.”
Syaoran looked right where I was standing. I hope he can’t see me or feel the card’s power. When he looked at Tomoyo, I breathed a sigh of relief.
Syaoran loved me? Since when? And where does Tomoyo get my permission to tell him that I love him?
“And I’m happy being around her. I’ve done it, I can continue doing it.”
“And when you leave? She’s not going to be around you and you’re both going to be sad. And my foot you’re happy. If you were happy, there would be no reason for you to yell at every male in and out of this school for wanting to go out with her. If you want her, then ask her out.”
Syaoran huffed and looked away. “I do want her, and I want to be happy, but I don’t want to be hurt. And I will be when she says no.” He paused for a while and looked at where I was again. “Did you know that the only reason why I’m still here is because I want to ask her out before I go? If I ask her and she says no then there is no reason for me to be here. I stayed for her. And even if she knows it or not, I’ll stay here until she tells me she hates me or she says she doesn’t want to go out with me. Even if she doesn’t love me, and still goes out with me, I’ll stay, ne?”
I decided that I was going to help them out and walked away. Going around the corner, I dismissed the Invisible Card. Walking back around the corner, I headed for the two of them. Syaoran saw me first and stopped what he was saying. Tomoyo looked over at me too.
“I thought you were going home?” she asked.
“Can I talk to Syaoran alone? Please?”
Tomoyo nodded at me and glared at Syaoran before she walked off. “I’m going home. I’ll see you all tomorrow.”
I walked over to the swing that she had left and sat beside Syaoran. “I tricked you. I was going to talk to you about something, but, like you said, I can’t lie. I have to tell you the truth.”
Syaoran tightened his grip on the chain. “What? That you hate me?”
I laughed to myself. “No, baka. I don’t hate you.” I took a deep breath and made myself look at Syaoran in the eye. “You know that there are new cards now, right? Well, I caught one when you weren’t with me.” I took the Invisible Card out of my pocket and gave it to him. When he looked at me with wide eyes, I nodded. “You know what I’m going to tell you. I used that card a few minutes ago when you and Tomoyo were talking. I was here.”
He handed the card back and rested his head in his hands. Dropping them between his legs, he sat staring at the ground.
“I…I know that I shouldn’t have used the card but you guys were bugging me when you talked behind my back. I wanted to know what you were talking about. I didn’t think that it would be that personal. I was going to lie to you and bring up this subject some other way, but then I told myself that it would make it more confusing with the lies running around.”
Syaoran looked at me with bleak eyes. “Why don’t we just drop this subject and forget it?”
“And what will you do? Are you going to leave?”
“What the hell else can I do? If I stay, you have to put up with me and…and my jealousy. But if I go, you won’t have to…walk around me.”
I got off the swing and walked towards him. Leaning in front of him, I rested my arms on his legs. He sat up straight and stared at me. I reached up and stroked his cheek. “Why don’t you listen to Tomoyo and do what she has been trying to make you do.”
“Uh…”
I giggled. “If only Tomoyo was here with her camera…” I stood up and walked behind him. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I whispered in his ear, “You say it first, then I will.”
“Sakura…I.” He turned his head to look at me. I smiled at him and touched his cheek with a finger. “Sakura, I can’t do it.”
“Why not?”
He sighed and looked back in front of him. “Because I don’t want to be hurt.”
“And that’s not the real reason. You know very well what I’d say to you and you know that I’d never hurt you. I think the real reason that you don’t want to tell me is that after you do, you won’t have anything to hide behind. You won’t have an excuse for staying if we…separate. But I don’t want us to separate. I know you don’t want to hear this right now, but nobody else will compare to you. Why do you think that I’ve never gone out with anyone before? Because I was waiting for you. And if you do leave, I’ll still be here waiting.”
Syaoran pulled me to stand in front of him. He pulled me to sit on his lap, he looked at me in the eye. “You’re not going to leave me?”
“Not unless you want me to go.”
Syaoran pulled me closer to him. “I never want you to leave. And hearing that I’m the only one is just what I was thinking about you. In fact…” he paused and reached into his pocket. “I know this isn’t what you’re expecting. Especially not this soon, but I’ve had this since we’ve been fourteen.” He pulled out a small black box and I knew what it was immediately.
Watching Syaoran open the box, I stared at the ring. It was white gold with an emerald and a topaz. Overcome with emotion, I looked away from the ring and into Syaoran’s face.
“Will you marry me?” he asked, his gaze hopeful and full of love.
I giggled and threw my arms around his neck and kissed him. “Of course I will, baka. I love you. And that’s what I was talking about before.”
Syaoran hugged me to him tight. I felt safe. “I love you, Sakura. Don’t ever leave me.”
I held his face in my hands. “We went through this already. I won’t leave you. I love you, Syaoran.”
