I'd not noticed that Comic Showcase in Oxford has gone, alas. I've never been a comics buyer but they were the only people in Oxford to get the Doctor Who fanzine 'In Vision' in the 1990s, and I occasionally picked up that there. Presumably a victim of the internet. Has the chain gone under? I know that the Charing Cross Road branch is no more.
I don't know, but alitophilus is taking a break before considering his options for moving on. The Charing Cross Road branch seemed to have had a flood of some sort before it went (at least, last time I was in there, it reeked of mildew so badly I had to leave).
Perhaps the flood might have spurred the landlords on to the redevelopment of the shop units currently ongoing there, though there were doubtless financial reasons as well.
My understanding is that once the London Comic Showcase closed down, it was only a matter of time. I must admit that I didn't shop much at the London branch, as it was not near the other main comic shops (Forbidden Planet, Gosh! etc.) and it never seemed very welcoming by comparison.
I do like having a friendly comic shop nearby, and both in Honolulu and Berkeley I developed good relationships with my local, being a regular customer spending a reasonable (if not lavish) amount each month on a combination of comics, books, and various - T-Shirts, etc. But even in London, Forbidden Planet isn't stocking back issues, so I thought Gosh! was most deserving of the custom. I do buy some of my trades on amazon.com, etc. but I prefer individual issue format where I can get it, as not everything gets collected, and I tend to be a completist for things I like.
It turned out that the extracts I got from my TiVo came to 5.1 gig (after I'd cut out the adverts), and a DVD holds 4.7. So either I had to get rid of another 10% or so (about 18 minutes) or...
I adopted new technology, and used Nero to drop the quality a bit. On the plus side, it gives me better menu construction tools, rather than just text names listed down the screen.
On the minus side, it reduces the quality, and it took Nero about 4 hours to do the work, which suprised me. It was four hours overnight though (but it does slow down potential turnaround times).

Oh, the DVD was fine - thanks for doing it! I think that the thing is that I do mot of my viewing on my portable DVD player or my computer, and so quality isn't so much of an issue as the screen size is so small. (Also, I'm generally the kind of viewer who isn't as aware of video or sound quality, at least not unless I'm vidding.)
Good. I thought it was ok, but I only watched a couple of minutes after dropping the quality. Specifically across the episode transition, because there's a whopping 7 minutes between the start of the broadcast and anything new happening. I didn't think you needed the recap ;-)

Regarding a similar thing... Is it possible for you to Tivo and convert Taggart: Dead man's Chest on UKTV Drama on Friday night? This is a (I believe) two parter, that stars Billy Boyd, and I have promised to see if I can get a copy sorted into a suitable downloadable format, like .avi or somehting, and host it somewhere. *sigh* If this isn't remotely possible you can tell me tomorrow. Lunch?
Hi - I'm popping in via moth2fic who heard your "Rum, Sodomy and the Slash" talk at the Slash 2 convention. I was wondering if there's any chance of being able to read your conference paper? It sounds interesting, in lots of different ways, for lots of different reasons to me - (and a great title)!
Thank you - I'm thinking of making at least part of the paper available online, possibly via one of the Age of Sail communities on livejournal, but I'm afraid I'll need to do some revision to it before I do so, particularly with regards to cite checking some of my footnotes. I can let you know when and where I've put something up?
Oh excellent, yes please. I'm not actually familiar with the Age of Sail comms - my interest has come in sort of slant-wise via other research (and why not mix it with slashing my fandom, thought I...) Is there one that you'd recommend?
On another note, hope I didn't alarm you too much by jumping over here, I won't be offended if you'd rather delete the posts if you feel they make too much of a trail - sorry!
