There's been discussion about how much freedom press has to shoot inside private businesses, and it's been tested in the courts.
It seems that restaurants are fair game, as long as you don't disrupt customers, which is kind of arbitrary.
You could shoot from a sidewalk, again, as long as it was public property. I would have told them to fuck off personally, because I highly doubt they can tell you NOT to take pictures while on their property. At best, they can restrict whether or not you can be on their property.
