There are always going to be sick people out there, and it is always better to err on the side of safety if at all possible. I would never, ever blame a rape on the victim. But no matter how many people speak out against rape, there are always going to be rapists, and it is good to spread information to women about how they can protect themselves.
The only true way to eliminate rape is to eliminate humans. Heck, humans are causing more harm than good on this planet, I say the planet should go into sanitisation mode ASAP.

They sent me a bunch of old comment emails too, I think they had a bug and then just fixed it so they all got sent now. on the front page they have updates about all the bugs and shit.

Instead of that? Shouldn't it be in addition? Are they advocating that women shouldn't learn how to defend themselves? Not leaving your drinks unattended and not getting plastered are just common sense tips. We'd all like to live in a world where women don't get raped, but unless you want to keep all the women indoors (not a bad idea, by the way), they need to know how to minimize their chances.
Should I have to worry about getting robbed if I am wearing diamond rings in the ghetto? No, I shouldn't. But that doesn't mean I will walk around the ghetto at 1:00 AM in the morning. You have a responsibility to not put yourself in certain vunurable situations. You are arguing theory and not reality. I hope no poor woman reads this and ends up getting hurt because she chose not to take precautions out of some kind of misguided sense of principle.
Rape isn't going to end by telling women to defend themselves. We can defend ourselves until we're fucking blue in the face and we're still going to get raped. You can carry pepper spray all you want but some ass can still wrestle it out of your hands, throw it across the room and rape you.
Not to mention, the VAST majority of rapes (over 90% of them) are performed by somebody the victim already knows and trusts, not someone who just kidnaps you in the alley. Many rapes are performed by a friend or boyfriend. How can I defend myself against that?
Yes, and murder will stop when people stop murdering people. And robbery will stop when people stop robbing people. But guess what? None of that is happening while humans exist. In the meanwhile, maybe you should be telling women how to best handle situations that they may find themselves in?
Just because you know someone, that doesn't mean you can't learn how to kick them in the balls and gouge their eyes out if you need to. You are saying that people shouldn't rape other people. Well, everyone agrees with you. But until that ideal is achieved, shouldn't we be educating women on how to protect themselves or how to minimize their chances of getting raped? That just seems like good common sense.

I have to through a dark alley every morning in order to get to the bus stop to go to work. How about instead of bringing along a bodyguard or walking an extra 30 minutes to avoid it, we just teach or boys what's right and wrong.
Maybe you've got a pessimistic view of humans, but I don't and I'm willing to believe that we can rid ourselves of these horrible things. Rape is not a basic instict, it is the product of a violent society that glorifies sex and degrades women. It is the result of a person who is so hungry for power that they'll take it by any means possible.

When you take something as serious as human rights violations and say that you are experiencing one because of Livejournal, it is insulting to all the people who are being affected by genocide, torture, opressive governments and other REAL violations. Livejournal is not throwing your family members into gas chambers. They're just looking out for your journal's safety.
I devote a great majority of my time to human rights work. You are comparing a small annoyance to their massive suffering. I find that offensive.
