CAREER ADVICE
All fifth years will be required to attend a short meeting with their Head of House during the first week of the summer term, in which they will be given the opportunity to discuss their future careers. Times of individual appointments are listed below.
The notice had appeared overnight, pinned to the bulletin board in Gryffindor Tower along with a list of names and times, as promised. The tables in the Tower were now littered with pamphlets and brochures advertising various careers available in the wizarding world and their various requirements; Lily ran a finger down the list and paused when her name was located.
Her meeting with Professor McGonagall would be on Monday afternoon, during Potions class. She wrinkled her nose a bit at the knowledge that she would be missing a good deal of one of her favorite classes (one of the few she shared with her best friend no less!) but she supposed that she wouldn’t be missing much if the other Heads of Houses were conducting their career consultations too. She moved to the tables and selected a few leaflets before sitting down by the fire and beginning to work her way through the things one by one.
Whatever path she chose would be decide the curriculum for her next two years at Hogwarts and then the rest of her life. She would have to consider wisely.

“Good afternoon, Miss Evans.” Professor McGonagall looked up from a carefully arranged file labeled Evans, Lily and she offered a smile which softened her stern face a few degrees. “Have a seat, won’t you?”
Lily complied, settling across from her Transfiguration professor who was shuffling pamphlets now and pushing her spectacles up the bridge of her nose in a graceful movement. The redhead took a moment to admire her Head of House; Minerva McGonagall was so very dignified and Lily wondered if when she became older she would be half as amazing.
“As you must know, Miss Evans, the upcoming O.W.L.s are one of the two most important examinations that you will take here at Hogwarts. It is at this point that we offer these meetings so that we might find the curriculum best fits your plans for the future.” Professor McGonagall explained, and Lily wondered how many times she had repeated those very same words in her career as Head of Gryffindor House. “Have you given any consideration into what you might like to do after you leave Hogwarts?”
“A bit.” Lily conceded, suddenly awkward. “I thought that I might go into teaching myself…”

She was barely eighteen when she married the man she never thought she would even look at. She found the journal in an old box. On the inside cover she had written her name, over and over and over again:
Lily Evans
Lily Snape Evans
Lily Lupin Evans
Lily Snape Evans
Lily Shacklebolt Evans
Lily Evans
Lily traced the handwriting and remembered each time she wrote her name, and each time she had crossed the men from her life. Severus, Remus, Kingsley. She had dreamed of marrying them. She had been a child then.
She was a child now. She took a quill and she wrote, very neatly beneath the names.
Lily Potter.

Lily was almost twenty-two when she died. She never had a chance to teach like she had hoped for.
