technological culture shock

I've been looking into getting a new cell phone (are mobile phones even cellular anymore? Isn't the term "cell phone" obsolete?) and installing high-speed internet at my new apartment. But after living in Japan, I find myself a bit frustrated. ^^; My mom keeps telling me that I can't compare Japan and America. Why not? TAT I'm not comparing culture

I'm sure if you look around on eBay they sell unlocked phones...but beyond that I know nothing.
