I know this has nothing to do with you guys, but could you take a look at this petition and maybe even sign it?? :D I'd reallllly appreciate it. You see, there are going to be massive budget cuts coming that somehow worked out to disproportionately affect the department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. The Korean department might get wiped out ( Read more... )

Ya, the grad students even started a facebook community about it. Funding allocation is all screwed up. It needs to be reformed. And yet they keep building new buildings. >.>

Thank you! *glomp*

one day I'd like to hear your thoughts about UCB besides the damn cuts.. (it sucks).. I just have an interest in what each UC is like. Disclaimer: I'm biased and think the UC I went to is the best.

I'm biased and think MY UC is the best. haha UCB is pretty much just what one would think I suppose. Very liberal. I think the surrounding community adds to it very much. I love all the local independent stores and restaurants. Some of my professors even try to be more green in the classroom. Everyday, there are pundits and other crazy people using the campus as a soapbox. And we've currently got protesters living up in trees to keep them from being cut down to make way for a new sports facility! Never a dull moment around here. Since it's taking my whole life to graduate, I've watched it change over the years and think it's better now than when I first came. Teachers have really embraced technology, making it easier for me! It's always been a research university so it tends to favor graduate study, but has made a lot of effort to give more support to undergrads. But, like anywhere there's a lot of bureaucracy and I think arts and humanities don't get as much support as they should. They don't bring in the grants and other money that ( ... )

very liberal? but that's not what I think of when I think of UCB. I went to UCSC, the very liberal, laid back, tiniest and most overlooked and made fun of UC. when I think of UCB, I think of a larger version of UCSC, but more corporate and stuffy. not as stuffy as UCLA, but still mac vs. pc sort of thing. UCSC is heading towards the science/tech model and that was in the master plan but they never told that to the art and other students or we were just blissfully unaware. I stayed there to be a staff member and there have been lots of changes. but still, I'd take any UC over Cal State any day.

Oh, UCSC! I'd agree that UCSC is just as, if not more liberal than UCB. I've always thought of UCSC as pretty progressive. :) I think the general atmosphere here from the students and surrounding community are very liberal. But when it comes to the school administration itself, there is definitely an air of the stuffy that you refer to. Because of its size and notoriety, I think there is a lot of pressure to do one thing or another. I feel like Haas Business School has a lot of power. I haven't always been happy about how things are handled higher up, but generally I feel that most of the people students have to interact with directly on a regular basis are pretty supportive.
