"Plotinus seems to be suggesting to really know oneself is to know the divine" adds new meaning to the "know thyself" inscription at the shrine of the Oracle
perhaps i spoke to soont3dySeptember 24 2004, 22:27:01 UTC
so i went for a drive today, listening to a tape lecture on classical myth, of course there was mention of the oracle in this one (on apollo) ... this prof interprets "know thyself" and "nothing in excess" (the 2 inscriptions above the door) as meaning people should know there place and realize they are not gods. in greek myth people are always getting uppity, trying to cross the limit between god and man, etc. "hubris" they call it. i'm not sure how I feel about that. we don't know what the secret of the eleusinian mysteries was, could be they were a gnostic sorta "the secret is the divine is in you" sorta thing.
According to the account of Eustochius, who attended upon at the end, Plotinus' final words were: "Strive to give back the Divine in yourselves to the Divine in the All." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plotinus
