Babbitt was the book I wrote my SATII Writing (or English??) essay on. Which is only noteworthy since I'd only read the first chapter... (No, it didn't hurt my score :)
So many of the books I read are written in that time period that I almost don't notice the differences. Possibly I should read more things written in my lifetime.
It's just odd to me. Pre WWI is pretty old to me , in many ways. But specifically in this book, they mention so many of the things that typify the current modern era. The cars and electricity, as I said, but also Babbitt mentions the switch from old sk00l heavy long underwear to what as best as I can figure is the modern version. Ice cream and suburbs, expectations of going to college, etc etc.
But then, women "still being uncomfortable with their new vote", the peculiar mindset of industry versus labor at the time (I mean, not that it's great now, but still). The Civil War being within (some) living memory.

I'm enjoying it though.
