No, this isn't a post about nursedarry's clinic. I've jumped from the court of the Sun King straight into Russian vampires. It's called Nightwatch by Sergei Lukyanekko. Actually, more than vampires. The Light and Dark sides, watchers for both sides trying to keep the balance, Others going rogue, magicians, witches, shape-shifters, werewolves/cats, you ( Read more... )

Oooooh! You're reading Nightwatch!!!! I love those books. I actually read Day Watch first, which was not bad because the storytelling is more coherent in that one. The books are a little choppy and I'm not sure it's just translation. The movies are also FANTASTIC.

*cheers*

Dahlias are finicky little things, aren't they? We are building out a garden network, on and off LJ. My husband is a great gardener-in-training and I'm the plant rescue team.

Yay, I'm glad someone else I know has read them! I always end up reading things that nobody else has. I keep hearing about the movies, but imdb keeps trying to give me the Danish Nightwatch (not that it isn't worth seeing for the lovely Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) or the totally insipid Ewan McGregor remake.

Oh wait, Netflix has them. Double yay! And it says that it was enjoyed by people who also liked Mirrormask and Hot Fuzz. Well hell, I totally have to rent them now! (Once I've read the books.)

I've had pretty good success with Dahlias that were already started. This is the first time I've tried from tubers. A guy at work is seriously into Dahlias, belongs to the national society and all that, so he brought in a ton of tubers last week, all marked with the variety...which means nothing to me. But he told me the stories behind each tuber, so now I'll feel really bad if I kill them. The only tuber story I remember is, "Here, this is Mrs. Kennedy. Mrs. Kennedy is a thug, so plant her where you need a thug." Oooookay then.

Mmm, infernal vortices...I think we need to have some of these at HSU. I've heard of this Russian vampire series; when you finish it give us your "thumbs up/thumbs down" eval.

"lazy sprouts" -- are those like brussels sprouts or alfalfa sprouts?
